While automated immigration channels sound like a dream fix for Bangkok's notorious airport queues, our team experienced the arrival process first-handโand the reality is a bit of a bottleneck.
Hereโs the catch:
โ Visa holders are out: Non-B, Non-O, ED, DTV, and tourist visa holders must use staffed counters.
โ First-timers are out: If you haven't entered Thailand on your current passport before, you can't use them.
โ Major nationalities missing: Despite being top tourist sources, passport holders from the USA and China aren't eligible.
During a peak 17:00 arrival, our Khaosod English employee logged a 45-minute wait in the standard lineโwell past the airportโs official 30-minute 'Red' maximum threshold. Others online have reported waiting as long as 2 hours.
To make matters worse, confusing signage placed deep inside the queue leaves hundreds of travellers guessing whether they qualify until they've already waited 20 or 30 minutes.
The E-gates are a fantastic step forward, but with millions visiting Thailand, clearer signage and broader accessibility could make a big difference.
