✨🧘🍄 New study 🍄🧘✨ Many people think that meditation & psychedelics might have similar effects. Our new study examines how beliefs & cognitive processes might be similar or different in consistent meditators versus psychedelic users Share widely!

“He acknowledges that there is “ego and investment” involved in defending his ideas.” How ironic…Excellent piece, @matthabusby!

Go check out the exhibit in Toronto before December!
How do psychedelics impact the brain? There are a few leading theories, and Dr. @ManojDoss (Associate Professor, The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School) explores one of them here.

Came for @TVonTheRadio (& @BeaccchHoussse & @thestrokes), stayed for @AOC & @BernieSanders. What a family experience in NYC with my sister, brother-in-law, & my revolutionary wife @curiel_198.

Note that if I’m not mistake, AtaiBeckley CEO @SriniGRao is co-author of the linked Journal of Neuroscience paper below in which they found a potential neurocognitive enhancement from a 5-HT2A drug. We’re currently testing whether this effect generalizes to human behavior!
Interesting when 1) a 5-HT2A agonist sharpened neural tuning/precision of working memory representations (jneurosci.org/content/22/7/2…) and 2) working memory capacity (rather than precision) tends to be more readily impaired by 5-HTA psychedelics compared to NMDA dissociatives.

Together, *might* suggest dissociable effects of psychedelics and dissociatives on WM capacity vs. precision: capacity less impaired by dissociatives, precision less impaired or even enhanced by psychedelics.

I was born in Texas, raised in Texas, currently live in Texas, graduated from UT (class of 2010), and now I'm faculty at UT, but I guess I'm a "problem," not a Texan (and by extension, not an American either 😔)
I heard UT graduation this year looked like this. I didn’t believe it. The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined.

New paper on the phenomenology of heightened feelings of familiarity under psychedelics!
1/ Happy to share our new study, published today, looking to better understand an intriguing feature of the psychedelic experience: Why can psychedelic experiences feel profoundly familiar, even when what is being experienced is novel? @ManojDoss & Akira O'Connor

I had an incredible visit to Toronto, and it was such an honor to see my work on display at @mrcolinjfleming and his colleagues' psychedelic exhibit at the @ROMtoronto. They worked so hard on this, so please check it out before December 6! #lakeontario

My chapter in the exhibit book! I should have taken more pics, but I had to capture the fact that they included @KiDCuDi among psychedelic music (something I 100% agree with!)

Lastly, it was great catching up w/@Nickkadysh & meeting my soon-to-be co-author @davidwlawrence1. Watch this space for more bizarre psychedelic effects on familiarity! Unrelated to David’s baseball connection but maybe related to psychedelics, check out the @TheDockEllis bar!

Austin, TX & surrounding community: We're testing the effects of psychedelics on brain function & cognition. This is not for mental health treatment, and there'll be several cognitive tasks (no lying on a couch or eyeshades), but you'll be supporting science! Please share!

Thanks Joey Dunsmoor for doing what I thought would be a necessary but not necessarily groundbreaking study that ended up raising more questions. He just had an R21 awarded in which we’ll attempt a replication and use fMRI and more advanced methods for amygdala targeting. 10/10
