We’re excited to welcome Jacob Rothman to the Sport Science Network as our Founding Strategic Advisor.
We’ve known Jacob since the early days of @perchFit and have had a front row seat to watching him build and grow the company. We’ve always admired not only what Jacob and the Perch team built, but how they approached building it. That’s a big part of why this feels like such a natural fit.
Jacob brings an incredibly valuable combination of experience as a founder and entrepreneur, perspective on technology and innovation, and an understanding of the performance industry.
As SSN continues to grow, he’ll help us think through how we build a sustainable organization, develop meaningful products and partnerships, and, most importantly, continue creating value for the sport science community.
From the beginning, we’ve wanted SSN to be a place that connects people, encourages collaboration and continuous learning, and helps move the field forward. Jacob believes deeply in that vision.
We’re grateful to have him helping us shape what comes next. Welcome to SSN, Jacob. We’re excited to build with you!

{New Podcast} What's the FIRST question you should ask when looking to invest in sports science or technology?
And why do more resources NOT necessarily mean better results?
I cover all that (and more) in this week's podcast with @marctlewis

External load tells you what the athlete did.
Internal load tells you how they responded.
Context tells you why it matters.
In his Sportsmith Premium presentation, @marctlewis (Houston Texans) breaks down how to connect all three, building monitoring systems that turn raw data into athlete-specific decisions.
From Z-scores to sleep scores, the goal is simple: understand the work, interpret the response, and act accordingly.
This is a must-watch for anyone monitoring training load and athlete response in team sport. Available exclusively on Sportsmith Premium and eligible for .75 CEUs

In case you missed it. New Sport Science Handbook coming soon by @AdamVirgile @marctlewis
it's not a how to use force plates or GPS guide ... it's a systems-based approach to problem solving.
Follow @sportscinetwork for more insights
What makes a sport science system effective?
• It’s not how sophisticated the metrics are.
• It’s not how many tools you’ve integrated.
• And it’s definitely not about how polished it appears—it’s how well it works.
An effective system helps you combine information, interpret it in context, and support better decisions—consistently, across roles, and under real-world constraints.
That doesn't happen because of one dashboard or tech feature. It happens because the system is intentionally designed to fit the environment it's meant to serve.
Some guiding questions:
1. What decisions does this system help us make?
→ If you can’t answer that clearly, the system is probably collecting more than it’s connecting.
2. How much of the system depends on one person?
→ If things break down when someone’s on the road, you don’t have a system—you have a dependency.
3. Are the outputs clear enough that someone else could act on them without you in the room?
→ If you constantly need to explain what the numbers mean, the insights aren’t actionable yet.
From The Sport Science Handbook:
“The best system isn’t the most comprehensive one. It’s the one that gets used consistently.”
A few more reminders:
• Simplicity doesn’t mean basic—it means usable under pressure.
• A strong system adapts to context—it doesn’t assume ideal conditions.
• Ineffective systems often collapse under the weight of their own design.
Simple. Focused. Built for decisions.
That’s what makes a sport science system effective.
