A traveler asked three bricklayers: "What are you doing?" "Laying bricks," said the first. "Building a wall," said the second. "I'm building a cathedral!" beamed the third. Same job, three perspectives. Each day, see yourself as building your own cathedral - whatever that may be.

From this week's parsha/torah reading. Genesis 18:7-8. Abraham ate milk and meat together. Not sure how, but I never noticed this before. Da’at Zekenim (and related Tosafist sources) emphasize the order in the verse itself: cream and milk are listed first, then the calf. They therefore conclude that Abraham served the dairy first and the meat afterward. In later Jewish law this order is permitted (one may eat meat after dairy, with appropriate cleaning of the mouth), whereas the reverse is more restricted. This reading preserves the assumption, found in the Talmud (Kiddushin 4:14 and elsewhere), that Abraham observed the Torah even before it was given. I've never found explanations like this satisfying. That's too kind. I detest explanations like this. If Abraham could eat a cheeseburger, why can't I? Rhetorical question. I know, I know...

Excellent explanation of where things stand:
Last night, the exit polls told one story: Netanyahu had lost, but it wasn’t clear who on the other side had won. This morning, the results are telling another. Netanyahu hasn’t won yet, but the change bloc has clearly lost. I’ve covered politics since the start of the century. I have never seen a camp organize for an election as impeccably, as efficiently and as energetically as the change bloc did. It signed model surplus-vote agreements, so that no leftover votes would go to waste, and ran an unprecedented operation flying Israelis home from abroad to vote. And by the actual count, it ended up with more or less the same number of seats as in the last election. Demography beat energy, and the message also proved flawed and unsuccessful. The public wasn’t convinced that the war had been a total victory, as Netanyahu claimed, but it also refused to buy the opposition’s claim that it was a total failure. It was repelled by Haredi draft-dodging, but didn’t think the solution was a minority government propped up by draft refusers and anti-Zionists. It was disgusted when ultra-Orthodox protesters chanted “We do not believe in the rule of the Zionists,” but it was just as shocked when “Biladi, Biladi,” the Palestinian national anthem, was sung at the Joint List’s headquarters last night. Netanyahu’s position changed completely between the release of the exit polls and the arrival of the real results. Last night it seemed clear that Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, a Likud loyalist, would be ousted and that, one way or another, Gadi Eisenkot, the former IDF chief of staff, would form a minority government. Now, by the criteria Eisenkot himself set, he has lost the legitimacy to form such a government. He promised he wouldn’t rely on the Arab parties’ votes, yet without a majority he would now need the active support of the Joint List, which looks futile and pointless. In post-October 7 Israel, there is no chance that a coalition including six candidates who lost immediate family to Hamas could last long alongside Joint List lawmakers who claim Hamas is simply a charitable organization. After the 1967 war, Defense Minister Moshe Dayan famously said Israel was waiting for the Arabs to call. In the same spirit, Netanyahu in effect told the change camp before dawn: here’s my phone number, feel free to use it. Yisrael Beiteinu’s Avigdor Lieberman, former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Eisenkot now face a dilemma from hell. They can go to another election, one that Israelis abroad will no longer fly home for. They can try to join Netanyahu’s bloc on tough terms, breaking their campaign pledges never to sit with him. Or they can beg the Islamist Ra’am and the Joint List, now drunk on their success, for support. And one final note: for the entire campaign, we searched for a third bloc, a centrist unity bloc between Netanyahu and his rivals. Candidates included Benny Gantz and former UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan, former general Ofer Winter and economist Yaron Zelekha, former Culture Minister Hili Tropper and who even remembers who else. They all collapsed, evaporated or vanished. And now it turns out the unity bloc may have been the Arab parties all along. Their historic, almost hysterical turnout, at rates that will need careful examination, shattered both sides’ dreams of a 61-seat majority. It reminded Jews on both sides that, after years of division, they may have to learn to sit together after all. newsletter.amitsegal.net/p/i…

When I have an unusually crazy day at work, I call it “juggling chainsaws.” Israeli politics is a constant, high-stakes game of juggling chainsaws. An Israeli prime minister has to keep all of this in the air at once: rivals in his own party, coalition partners, the opposition, the Palestinians, Arab neighbors (friend and foe), Iran and its proxies, Europeans (friend and foe), Americans (friend and foe), Russia, China, and more. It’s an impossibly difficult job. Love him or hate him, nobody juggles chainsaws better than Benjamin Netanyahu. @netanyahu @Israel

So many of these ridiculous exit polls will age like milk. Everyone would do well to relax. Go read a book. Watch T.V. Listen to music. Go to sleep. The actual results will be here soon enough. All this drama is idiotic.

Wow. Incredible. Tree of Life rocked my world. My wife grew up there. My in-laws still belong and live a 10 minute walk away. People shot there were at my wedding. Here's the important part: Pittsburgh has always been a bigotry and antisemitism-free city. A wonderful place to be Jewish. If Jews can be massacred at prayer in Pittsburgh, then jews are unsafe everywhere. Tree of life set me on my journey of gun ownership, running security for my congregation, and advocating for Jewish gun ownership and self-defense.

Just so you understand how cute this is... In a real Israeli polling place voters pick a little paper slip representing the party they want to vote for. This adorable little girl is choosing from slips that read pineapple 🍍, lemonade 🍋, grapes🍇, etc...
How adorable is this??? My friend's daughter "voting" this morning in school in Israel. What a great way to teach kids about the democratic process and instill in them the importance of voting. Amazing.

The world cannot possibly comprehend the debt of gratitude it owes to The Jews.
Jewish immigrants from Eastern & Southern Europe helped shape America’s cheesecake culture. The iconic New York style cheesecake rich, dense, and now the most popular style, is also known as “Jewish-style.”

Your periodic reminder that people believe what they want to believe - the facts be damned. CC: @CoryBooker
FACT: The annual funding Israel receives from the US amounts to less than one-tenth of 1% of the federal budget. Less than 1/10th of 1%. FACT: That annual funding would cover only a few hours of federal health care spending. A few hours. Yet politicians who specialize in scapegoating would have you believe that Israel is responsible for America’s affordability crisis. Like every form of scapegoating before it, it is a dangerous lie.

This exact strategy at my church. One could never guess who in our congregation is carrying.

Probably close to 100% of American Shuls/Synagogues/Temples have an armed guard open carrying in a SECURITY uniform. That's the visual deterrent. The problem is if that guy gets killed everyone else inside is helpless. Having both is smart. In my opinion, ironically, the guy open carrying is the guy most likely to get killed.
Only if a sufficient number of people are known to be armed, or with a high likelihood. But even still, also helps to have some people openly carrying too, for visual deterrent.

When Beyoncé, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Lizzo and others support @KamalaHarris it's cool, but @NICKIMINAJ supporting @realDonaldTrump? Not cool. Hypocrites.
The left is melting down right now because Trump made a joke about Nicki Minaj and said he doesn’t respect women… Meanwhile, Democrats brought out Megan Thee Stallion to twerk for votes for Kamala Harris. 🤣👇

ENOUGH is ENOUGH. Less than 2000 people died on October 7th. More than 80,000 have now been slaughtered in Gaza. I categorically condemn Hamas, but I condemn with equal fervour the brutal occupation, apartheid and actions of the terrorist state that is Israel.

You know our countries in serious trouble when conservative politicians have to use black female rappers with huge asses to win elections.
