The US Department of War has designated Confucius Institutes as a threat to American national security. Secretary Hegseth said 80 of them reappeared across 30 universities under different names, with the same mission: to infiltrate the minds of students. The same is happening here in the Philippines. We host Confucius Institutes at various universities, each with a co-director sent from China. Retired Justice Carpio warned in 2022 that they can propagate the falsehood of the nine-dash line. Beijing's campaign against the Philippines is not waged only at sea. It is also waged in classrooms. If our closest treaty ally sees these institutions as a national security threat, it is time we ask the same hard questions.🤔

Teodoro to PMAers: Reject defeatism, pursue ambitious defense plans MANILA – Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has urged future military leaders at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) to pursue more ambitious defense plans and "defeat defeatism," saying the Philippines cannot afford complacency when its sovereignty and territory are at stake. Speaking at the PMA’s founding anniversary on Saturday, Teodoro said the country must accelerate efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities and respond to evolving security threats. “We need to be ambitious in order to have the right motivation to deal with these challenges, and to defeat defeatism, and to show an example to the public that we are ready, willing, and able to stand firmly and proudly for the core values of the Republic of the Philippines,” he said. “The Philippines cannot afford to be laid-back and non-ambitious and conservative, particularly when its territory and sovereignty are concerned,” he added. Teodoro said the country must make up for lost time in preparing for national security challenges, noting that defense plans should have been laid out years ago. “When national security is concerned, ambitious plans needed to have been laid down on the ground years ago. But we cannot recoup the past, we can only make the present faster,” he said. He cited emerging technologies, new operational domains and the growing weaponization of information as challenges requiring the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the PMA to continuously adapt and develop leaders capable of anticipating and managing future threats. “We are in a race and a struggle to increase our capabilities and increase our footprint, and increase our ability to enforce our laws within a vast maritime domain that we have and we are fighting for,” Teodoro said. He described the PMA as a specialized institution tasked with providing world-class education while preparing cadets for deployment as junior officers in the AFP and, in the future, the Philippine Coast Guard. Teodoro also emphasized the distinction between education, which builds knowledge, and training, which develops the practical skills needed for military service. He reaffirmed the need for a professional, knowledgeable and highly trained armed force capable of protecting the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national dignity. During the anniversary celebration, Teodoro and PMA Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michael G. Logico recognized distinguished officers, personnel, and individual and institutional partners of the Academy. Along with prosecuting Zaldy Co and Romualdez, the government needs to start investigating the kickback system under the Duterte period too. Henry Alcantara, testifying before the Romualdez bail hearings, claims the 20% kickbacks for infrastructure started during the Duterte admin DPWH, before Rep. Zaldy Co started asking for 25% when Romualdez was speaker. This means Mark Villar is in a lot of hot water, with there likely being many former public works officials willing to testify about his term as DPWH secretary. gmanetwork.com/news/topstori…

The Philippine Left going after @lenirobredo and the @LiberalPH s , only for the COMELEC to deregister Bayan Muna as a party-list group due to "failure to meet participation or electoral performance requirements" is sweet, sweet schadenfreude. It basically means these guys are constant losers that don't deserve to even be on the ballot due to lack of popular support. Other notable losers removed by the COMELEC includes Sara Duterte's Hugpong ng Pagbabag, Mocha Uson's MOCHA, and Sen. Trillanes's Magdalo Party-List. philstar.com/headlines/2026/…

The Romualdez bail hearing is still going on, a sort of political sideshow to the dramatics we're seeing play out in the Senate. During Day 4 of the bail hearing for former House Speaker Martin Romualdez's P7.44-billion plunder case, police major and former close-in security Alvin Nuguid testified that he witnessed suitcase deliveries to properties linked to Romualdez, stating he saw the suitcases rather than the actual cash inside. The defense, in order to bail Romualdez out, is highlighting the supposed gaps in the witness testimonies such as none of the security aides could confirm what was actually inside the suitcases. In his bail petition, Romualdez argued that the accounts of luggage deliveries fail to establish the source, the specific amount of the alleged money, or proof that he personally received it. During cross-examination on Day 4, the defense capitalized on the admission from Police Major Alvin Nuguid and fellow security aide Larry Bellen that they had no personal knowledge of the suitcases' contents. Nuguid even noted that while he rode in a VIP car with former lawmaker Elizaldy Co, he never overheard any conversations regarding the delivery of money. The prosecution recently brought forward witness Gil Navidad, who directly testified that he participated in the delivery of suitcases explicitly containing money across four key locations, including Romualdez’s purported residence. They argue that witnesses like Police Major Alvin Nuguid establish the physical movement by testifying to seeing 50 to 60 suitcases systematically delivered to co-accused former Rep. Zaldy Co's residence two to three times a week. The next hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The Sandiganbayan Third Division established a strict, continuous timeline to resolve the ongoing bail petition by November 12, 2026. Hearings for this phase are held three times a week, every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. gmanetwork.com/news/topstori…

'CHINA MUST RESPECT THE LAW' READ: The National Security Council of the Philippines issued a statement condemning the recurring unlawful activities, unauthorized fishing, and dangerous maneuvers of Chinese vessels within Philippine maritime zones. The National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS) emphasized that under UNCLOS and the 2016 Arbitral Award, unilateral claims cannot override Philippine sovereignty and international law. The council calls on China to cease its unlawful operations and respect international maritime obligations.
