ALT Adult speculative mystery 80,000 words An archaeologist is murdered with a strange pre-historic weapon at a remote dig site in the Black Hills National Forest. With an uncanny habit of showing up in the right place at the right time, wild-haired Clova has secret skills from 5,000 years ago - she happens to know a lot about those weapons, and she's desperate to impress her crush Deputy Joe Redwing. Amid their investigation of the ambitious, backbiting archaeologists and interns at the site, Clova must be careful to guard the mystery of her own shocking identity: she's a time-traveler who's been shifting back and forth between present day and her own culture - a matriarchal hunter gatherer community that chased elk in these very same hills 5,000 years ago. When rare skeletal remains warn Clova of a tragedy impending in her own time, she must decide whether to risk revealing her secrets, because only she can bring justice to the people counting on her, across both edges of human history.
