“Trump and Musk have given the best reason why not to buy American.”
The recent Starlink / Starshield incident in Ukraine has created a dangerous precedence for the US export industry, many haven't yet grasped. The sudden deactivation respectively curtailing of those systems without warning not only cost precious lives, but also equipment worth millions.
Though the blame game between the White House (Trump) and SpaceX (Musk) is going on, ultimately it doesn't matter. It showed the world that the USA are not a reliable partner any more. Pointing at some obscure "violation of terms of services" without providing the exact passage are just increasing that notion that this was a political move.
The explanation that Starlink must not be used for "offensive" means is nonsense, too. Starlink has never been turned on over Russia, and using it in Ukraine is by definition defensive in nature. You can even argue that hitting Russian targets in Russia is defensive, since you don't have to wait for an attack to be conducted. Even the intention is enough to warrant action and to eliminate the threat at the source. But this is a different topic.
Furthermore, SpaceX has been fully aware that its Starlink terminals are being used by Ukrainian forces. Especially when considering that Ukraine only recently had to white-list their Starlink terminals for the Ukrainian military so that Russian forces, who have been abundantly using Starlink as well, were locked out. It has always been clear that those Starlink terminals are used for and by the Ukrainian military, and Ukraine has always been thankful for that.
Coming up with this bogus story, now, three weeks before midterms is therefore as transparent as it is shameless. It is obvious for everyone that this was just figleaf statement so that a political agenda can be pushed, an agenda which runs counter to the strategic nationalist interests of the USA, both political and economic.
And this is the real scandal. It is not new that the US had to lock out its technology or supplies to nations with which it had previously good and even cordial relation. Iran under the Shah, South-Vietnam and Cuba before Castro are just three to name it. But as you can see from them, it made perfectly sense back then. Those nations switched sides or disappeared altogether.
Ukraine on the other hand didn't switch sides and even helped the US in the most recent and botched Iran war, despite being short on ammunition itself. The Ukrainian government accepted every possible compromise and offered an unconditional ceasefire from the start. Russia on the hand refused all of it and is demanding surrender. Yet, it gets this treatment? Unbelievable.
This will be noted by all clients around the globe who purchase US weapons and technology. If agreements are not honored and can unilaterally and even clandestinely be altered based on the whims of a few, who only follow their own motives or election lies, then the all concept reliability falls apart.
Whether it is Starlink, the F-35, Tomahawk missiles or HIMARS. All those systems run on software and in many cases can only properly operate with recent updates. You don't even need have a kill switch. You can only refuse to update and many of those systems lose more than 90% of their effectiveness within a short period, making worthless.
This is why we see the blame game between Musk and Trump. I'm sure that people around those guys told them how absolutely shortsighted and stupid this step was. It will fall back on the entire US industry. Not even those two guys are worth that losses and backlash. A functional US Congress would immediately start subpoenas and hearings, asking questions in order to mitigate the damage, but here we are.
Trump and Musk have given the best reason why not to buy American. Customers - governmental and private alike - around the globe will take note of this and act accordingly, and I wouldn't be surprised if this won't be limited to US military products only. An absolutely senseless and avoidable own goal.

Obama: "I spent 8 years cleaning up the mess Republicans left me, then handed it to Trump. 75 straight months of job growth. All he did was give tax cuts to people who don't need them, increasing the deficit, and now he wants to do it again."

NEW from me:
Last year, Mark Carney set a goal to double Canada's non-US exports by 2035. Today, he's already halfway there
In response to Trump's tariffs & threats, Canadian businesses, consumers, & even tourists are taking difficult steps to decouple from the US🧵
I’d say that Donald Trump is full of sh*t but his eyes are blue so he is down a quart.
Canada HAS NOT been ripping the US off & Canada IS NOT willing to give the US anything. We are ready to wait you out until you are replaced, you are committed or drop dead from whatever.

Damn! Trump sure is pulling in the crowds!!! Oh wait, my bad, that was Barack Obama last night in Michigan.

Left: President Trump, "I saw Obama was in Michigan and the place was empty"
Right: Obama, El-Sayed and Benson walk onto stage and the full house crowd erupts in joy
My view:
Trump’s claim that Obama’s Michigan event was empty is instantly undone by the scene beside it: Obama, El-Sayed and Benson stepping onto a stage before a packed crowd, greeted with cheers.
A president should be able to face a rival’s popularity without inventing a story to erase it.
Trump’s response is to sneer, distort and insist that what people can plainly see did not happen.
That is not strength; it is the behaviour of someone who cannot tolerate being outshone.
There is a reason he keeps trying to turn public life into a contest over who can command the biggest crowd. He needs constant proof that he is admired, feared and winning.
When reality challenges that image, he reaches for a lie.
The damage goes beyond one false boast.
Every time he asks people to distrust their own eyes, he chips away at the basic honesty a democracy depends on.
He shows no respect for the public, no generosity towards his opponents and no sense of the dignity the office of the President of the United States should carry.
This is a president who mistakes cruelty for strength and dishonesty for politics.
The crowd in Michigan tells its own story.
Trump’s lie reveals him, and it is a tragedy for democracy that our institutions in the western world don't have a mechanism to address and correct politicians who lie so utterly shamelessly.

WOW, Americans overwhelmingly support Ukraine over Russia, 66% in favor, with only 3% for Russia.

Caroline Sunshine @CSUNSHINE should change her surname as she is certainly not very bright.
In CUSMA/USMCA the tariff rates for dairy products (& others) above the specified quotas were exactly the same for each country & the 🇺🇸 never triggered the higher tariff rates.
🚨 BREAKING:
Sunshine: "Well, Canada is proof that tariffs work because they already have them. They impose tariffs on our dairy industry. They say that once you reach a certain amount of imports..."
Phillips: "We've never reached the quota that triggers those tariffs. And guess who negotiated those quotas? President Trump."

As I have said previously when @SecScottBessent commented on the Canada / US trade disputes, Bessent is such a terrible liar.
Biden had nothing to do with the drop-off of soybean purchases by China either in 2018 or in 2025.

BY TRUMP'S OWN DEFINITION, AMERICA IS RIPPING OFF CANADA ON DAIRY.
Trump repeatedly accuses Canada of ripping off American dairy farmers, pointing to tariffs approaching 300%. What he conveniently omits is that those tariffs generally apply only after negotiated import quotas are exceeded. Within those quotas, qualifying American dairy enters Canada tariff-free.
In 2025, the United States exported $1.06 billion in dairy products to Canada, while importing just $391 million in return. That's a $669 million American trade surplus under the very agreement Trump negotiated, signed and celebrated as the best trade deal America had ever made.
Now consider the contradiction. If a trade imbalance is evidence that one country is exploiting another, as Trump so often suggests, shouldn't Canadians be complaining that American dairy producers are ripping them off?
Of course not. A trade surplus isn't proof of exploitation, any more than a trade deficit is proof of unfair treatment. Countries trade because both sides expect to benefit.
But if we're going to judge international trade by Trump's own standards, there's one rather uncomfortable question: Who exactly is ripping off whom?

Donald Trump is already preparing for a possible Democratic victory in the midterm elections and has explained what he intends to do if Democrats win.
His plan is remarkably simple: “If there’s political gridlock, I’ll veto everything. And the Democrats would come to negotiate.”
In other words, even if Democrats take control of Congress, Trump expects to turn divided government into a tool of pressure: blocking their legislation with presidential vetoes until they agree to negotiate on his terms.
But there’s one important detail.
If Democrats win the House of Representatives, they will be able to block Trump’s legislative agenda, exercise control over federal spending, summon administration officials to hearings, and investigate his administration. Presidential vetoes cannot stop congressional oversight or investigations.
And if Democrats also win the Senate, they will gain additional power to delay or block judicial nominations and appointments of senior government officials.
So the reality might look very different from Trump’s vision of “I veto everything, and they come begging for a deal.”
Instead, America could face years of legislative deadlock, budget battles, and congressional investigations.
Trump, however, is already presenting the possibility of political paralysis as another negotiating advantage.
If he cannot govern the country on his own terms, he can always try to hold it hostage instead.
That's pretty much the idea.

Trump says Canada pays his tariffs.
So why the fuck is he cutting them to save American businesses?
Maine farmers are hurting. Border-state businesses are paying more. American jobs are being put at risk.
Trump spent months telling Americans that foreigners pay the bill.
Now he’s handing out tariff exemptions because Americans can’t afford it.
If Canada pays the tariffs, why do Americans need relief?

This is nuclear meltdown, ALL of the CEO's have quit the polar LNG project in Alaska because they learned that it was being secretly funded by Russia. Trump is a traitor not to just the Allied Nations but to his OWN country. How dare the U.S.A. talk about corruption or morality
Holy fucking shit! This must be STOPPED!!
"Polar LNG is an American company with a bald eagle and a flag on its website, promising that it “helps ensure the United States leads” and calling itself “America’s Arctic Advantage.”
Its plan is to liquefy natural gas on Alaska’s North Slope and ship it to Asia.
The New York Times found that at least some of its money came secretly from Novatek, a Russian energy giant under partial U.S. sanctions with close ties to Putin.
The man who ran the company said so. Joel Riddle, Polar LNG’s CEO until September, said he was told the startup money came from a company in the United Arab Emirates and later learned otherwise.
“It’s not only unlawful, but it’s not in the U.S. interest to have Russian technology controlling the commercialization of Arctic gas in the North Slope,” he said.
Novatek is no longer hiding it. The company told the Times on Friday that it’s moving to acquire “minority shareholder” status in the project: a sanctioned Russian firm openly seeking a stake in American gas production.
Putin discussed the project last month with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s envoys, as one of several energy deals the White House believes could smooth relations with Moscow and help end the war in Ukraine.
The Times found no indication Witkoff or Kushner knew about Polar LNG or its Novatek ties.
The sanctions that would block it carry a familiar name. The Graham Act specifically targets Novatek and its Arctic LNG 2 project because of the company’s ties to Putin. Trump waived those sanctions last week, calling it necessary to keep peace talks going.
Riddle didn’t leave quietly. He attached memos from the law firm Baker Botts to his resignation letter, noting that Treasury’s sanctions unit had already raised “potential Russia-related sanctions concerns” about the company’s Novatek ties.
At least two other top executives have also left, and Trump officials were warned about the secret Russian financing and urged to investigate. The Energy Department didn’t respond to the Times.
Polar LNG went after him. The company called Riddle a “disgruntled former employee,” said he was “terminated for cause,” and threatened litigation. Documents show he resigned six days before that termination letter, which cited, in part, his sanctions concerns.
“It is terrible on environmental grounds, it is a terrible idea on economic and geopolitical grounds, and most importantly this feeds the belief that Putin can get an out-of-jail-free card,” said Geoffrey Pyatt, a former State Department energy official.
Russian money in an American company, Russian technology on the Alaskan seabed, a Russian stake in American gas, discussed with Putin by the Trump’s envoys, and a sanctions waiver Trump signed weeks before an election."
