To see whether my "Overreact" engine (overreactjs.github.io) is good enough, I've challenged myself to use it to build a full game, published to Steam, in the next 60 days!
I'll update this thread with progress shots each day! π§΅

"I spent a year working on my game, but because it has the AI label, no-one is buying it." π
Then presents game trailer that looks like incongruous garbage!
It ain't the AI tag that's putting folks off fella!
Anyway, here's some more from Beep's Escape (where no AI was used)

Trying out a trapdoor fade effect in Melkhior's Tower, for when a level is completed in time trial mode. The fade will help with a smooth transition to the result screen.

I found a GIF of the animation. Color clash made this a real challenge, to keep the yellow center following a smooth arc.
The hardest part of making Beep's Escape was creating the jumping fireballs animation.
Keeping the yellow center without breaking the Spectrum's colour clash limitation was tough!
@mitsuko_harada do you want to have a go at animating this one? Let's see if the ai can redeem itself...
That god awful gen AI waterfall animation (and the discussion around it) has prompted me to revisit the extended edition of Beep's Escape that I had planned, to finish and release it. π
This is the best idea yet.
I never thought I'd find myself advocating for segregation, but I'll make an exception for AI slop. βΊοΈ

Please take all the AI games off of steam and put them on epic then please. Offer them an incentive to put them on epic. Make epic THE AI game store so I can keep the slop away from me via your shitty launcher π
The mental gymnastics that AI chads go through is wild.
If you want to remove a label, you're trying to hide information from customers. That's information they can use to better inform their decision on whether to make a purchase or not.
That's disingenuous.
Tim's making a really important point here and I think people fundamentally misunderstand it.
Let's paint a scenario. You are an indie developer and you want to make a game.
Traditional game development will take you 1 year and cost you $200,000 in outsourcing costs to buy art, animation, and additional programming resources.
AI assisted game development will take you 3 months and cost you $50,000 in credits + some additional resources.
In a good scenario your game could make $200,000 and break even, but in many scenarios you mortgage your house and no one sees your game and you are out your savings.
Now, with the anti-AI mania, Valve is forcing real economic harm on you because you get the equivalent of hate mobs at your door for your choice of tooling.
Your economic viability is harmed because Valve chooses to put a label on you that generates negative attention. It makes your economics worse.
Anti-AI proponents will point out that this proves their hate campaigns work. The appeal is not to them, because they are morons, but to developers to stand up to Valve and say remove these labels so that we can have livelihoods. And Valve makes money of you either way.
Stand up for your rights, devs!

Devs should disclose AI use for the same reason I want to know if the eggs I buy are free range or battery hens.

Forcing developers to write a political statement to be used against them by the hate mob theyβre helping organize is abhorrent.

Yes. Period.
The moment I realize a game has GenAI assets, I lose all interest.
I am not spending my hard earned money or limited time on a game that is just stopped commissioned from a computer.
If you aren't passionate enough to actually make the game, why should I care?
Here's the full launch trailer for Beep's Escape, featuring the waterfall animation, jumping fireballs and explosions, and a genuine loading screen, all fully ZX Spectrum compliant.
Enjoy!
Ouch! This is embarrassing!
It's already animated in the game, and what's more, the in-game animation respects the ZX Spectrum's graphical limitations of 2 colours per 8x8 tile.
Ok, y'all can calm down now! I think the AI chads have had enough punishment for one day.
(Only joking!) π€£

Thanks for doing a macOS release!
Geez, that was fast!
Ok, I've finally seen a use for bots that I think I agree with: Finding and automatically reposting artwork from Dizzy games! π
I asked our CTO (my boss) recently:
If AI speeds up development, do we (a) expect devs to deliver more value in the same amount of time, or (b) allow them to deliver the same amount of value with less effort on their part?
He still hasn't come up with an answer yet.
Mini game idea for the extended edition of Beep's Escape.
Hands up if you know the reference.
Clue: π₯π₯
