away with a significant section of the party's supporters. And I suspect ODM is dealing with a much bigger problem than it wants to admit: a lot of people who once identified with the party may have quietly moved on.
Today's rally will probably be about showing that ODM is still strong, that the party is united and that it still commands a huge following. But we all know that filling a venue and retaining people's loyalty are two very different things.
And then there is the leadership question.
Raila was not just a party leader. He was the face, the voice, and the political glue that held ODM together. Who fills that space now?
Gladys Wanga, Simba Arati, John Mbadi and the other senior figures have a huge challenge ahead. The question is whether any of them can build that emotional connection with ordinary supporters that Raila had.
ODM can organise a big rally, bring thousands of people together and dominate the headlines today. But can it bring back the supporters who no longer feel represented?
That is the real test facing ODM after Raila.

What happened today is almost a replay of what happened 19 years ago. Back then, Baba was in Sifuna’s position.
Opposition figures had united behind a common cause to make Kibaki WANTAM. Kalonzo, however, believed he was the best candidate and deserved to be ODM’s flag bearer, ahead of Raila.
At the Mombasa rally, Kalonzo was subjected to a hostile reception and badly heckled by crowds perceived to be Raila supporters. His speech was interrupted midway, he lost his cool, threw tantrums and eventually walked away to form ODM-Kenya and run for president.
He finished a distant third, split the opposition vote and inadvertently handed Kibaki the advantage he needed. That is how Kibaki’s TUTAM became a reality.

It was Watch Night, 31 December 1983, and the usual celebration was heralding a new year across Nigeria. President Shehu Shagari had flown to Abuja not knowing he was going to be overthrown.
In that early morning while people were still in the nightstand mood, soldiers struck.
It was Brigadier Sani Abacha that announced that coup on radio, declaring that the military had taken over and that General Muhammadu Buhari would head the new government.
By morning the Sunday Times of 1st January 1984 carried the story with the headline GEN BUHARI HEADS NEW GOVT As military take-over, listing a dusk to dawn curfew, suspension of the constitution, retirement of all service chiefs, and a ban on political activities, ending with Happy New Year...

On 9th July 2007, ODM (Then united as ODM Kenya) held a mammoth rally at Tononoka Mombasa. Kalonzo Musyoka was badly heckled. That is the day he left the then United Opposition to launch his own Kupita Kati Kati bid. Today at Lavington, close to 20 years later. The same happened. Clever Edwin Sifuna had the spirit of Tononoka descend upon him. Kalonzo was heckled again. The objective was the same. In 2007, it was becoming clear that Kalonzo's insistence to fly the opposition flag despite the math not mathing was complicating the opposition equation. Tononoka was to tell him kanyanga kubwa kubwa. 5 years later in 2012, Uhuru and Ruto had to jettison Kalonzo for their maths to math. Lavington today was a set up for the same. Riggy G and Sifuna have done that thing to Man Stevo again. This Kamuti of being the Coitus Interruptus of Kenyan politics has to be exorcised. May be Ruto will be sent by God to do it

A strong decision by the U.S. State Department – authorizing Ukraine’s purchase of Patriot interceptors to counter Russian ballistic missiles. Five hundred PAC-3 interceptors is a substantial number, and very soon – this winter – they COULD make for a highly effective defense package. However, it has been stipulated that deliveries may begin ONLY IN A FEW YEARS. We are asking our American partners to find a solution for the time when there is a real danger and a real need to use PAC-3 interceptors.
Right now, the Russians are attacking our energy infrastructure every single day. In just these past two weeks of October, there have already been more than 30 Russian strikes on critical parts of our power grid. It is right now, even before the beginning of winter, that Putin has started carrying out his operation to attack the systems that sustain life in our cities and communities. The targets are electricity, heating, water supplies, bridges, and life in our cities in general.
We did ask our American partners to provide Ukraine with a winter support package – at a rate of 100 Patriot interceptors per month. Five hundred missiles would be enough to protect our skies over the coming months – precisely when it is so important for Ukraine to be in a strong position in negotiations and for Russia NOT to succeed in breaking life in Ukrainian cities and communities.
The United States, our European partners, and other partners around the world have sufficient stocks of PAC-3 interceptors in their warehouses. Providing them to Ukraine right now – in the winter of 2026–2027 – and replenishing our partners’ arsenals LATER, in THE FOLLOWING YEARS, through this production already contracted and paid for by Ukraine and our partners would be the right approach. And it is entirely feasible.
We are grateful to President Trump. Importantly, we recently discussed PAC-3 interceptors with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Ukraine is grateful to the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Administration overall for granting this authorization. But we are asking for decisions that can guarantee the protection of lives not the day after tomorrow or sometime later, but at the very moment the threat is there – when Russia is killing and destroying. I thank everyone who stands with Ukraine!

We therefore have the responsibility to guide, change and, when necessary, reject its applications. A reliable system that serves the human person is of greater value than one that is exceptionally powerful but whose consequences cannot be adequately foreseen or controlled.
