I think you've accidentally written one of the best arguments for sensible preparedness I've seen on X.
And you've raised the question that gets lost somewhere between the tactical backpacks and the 50-gallon drums of freeze-dried chicken:
**What exactly are we trying to survive FOR?**
Because if your entire survival plan involves spending the next 30 years sitting in a bunker, eating dehydrated stroganoff, and watching the driveway for marauders, I can understand why the apocalypse might start losing its appeal.
Personally, I enjoy hot showers, cold beer, indoor plumbing, and the occasional meal that doesn't come out of a vacuum-sealed pouch.
I'd prefer to keep those things.
But here's where I'd offer a slightly different perspective.
We tend to imagine the post-apocalyptic world as an endless procession of armed lunatics fighting over the last can of Campbell's soup.
And perhaps that's because Hollywood has spent 50 years convincing us that the moment electricity disappears, everyone immediately becomes a homicidal motorcycle enthusiast.
But humanity didn't survive thousands of years because everyone was exceptionally good at defending a bunker.
We survived because we learned to cooperate.
To grow food. Share knowledge. Treat the sick. Build shelter. Raise children. And figure out whose turn it was to clean the communal toilet.
Which brings me to your excellent observation about sanitation.
Everyone wants to discuss firearms, food storage, and EMP-resistant electronics.
Almost nobody wants to discuss what happens when 40 people on your street have nowhere to poop.
And yet, historically speaking, sanitation has probably done more for human survival than the entire tactical equipment industry.
**Here's what I ultimately believe:**
Prepare enough that an emergency doesn't immediately become a catastrophe.
Learn enough that you're useful to other people.
Build enough community that you're not facing everything alone.
And then, for God's sake, go enjoy your life.
Take the trip. Have dinner with friends. Watch the sunset. Hug your kids.
Because spending your entire life preparing to survive the end of civilization, while forgetting to actually enjoy civilization, would be an extraordinarily stupid way to waste a

In the real world, Canadians can’t afford anything. Food, fuel, rent, mortgages.
Mark Carney promised to make it better. Everything is worse.
Today, he and the Liberals are distracting Canadians again with yet another grand summit about Europe. Big talk. What’s the result?
Not one tariff reduced. Not one of the nine European holdout countries has ratified the trade agreement Canada already has with them. Barriers to Canadian beef and pork exports to Europe remain. And now the EU is threatening a carbon tariff on Canadian steel, aluminum, cement and other goods.
Worse, there was lots of talk at the summit about aligning Canada with the insane European taxes, debt, immigration and anti-oil and gas policies that have left parts of Europe bankrupt and burning.
Does any of this lower your mortgage payments, rent, grocery bills or gas prices, back here in the real world?
Of course not.
Time to get real. We have mouths to feed. Bills to pay. Crime to stop. Borders to secure. And money to save.

Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy.
It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.”
they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception.
And the results are wild.
participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile.
they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence.
the paper revealed a brutal paradox:
the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain.
if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing.
this creates a dangerous systemic loop.
the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions.
meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse.
top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else.
they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add.
we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence.
the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't.
the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.

99% of women and girls in Somalia have been mutilated in the following way: the clitoris is cut off, along with the inner labia. Then the inner flesh of the outer labia is removed before both sides are sewn tightly together, leaving a hole no bigger than a matchstick for urine and menses to trickle through.
All of this is done in childhood, and without any form of anesthesia whatsoever. Sometimes the little girl is given a scrap of leather or a stick to bite down on. The cutters use old razor blades, or sometimes a piece of broken glass.
This is only the beginning of a girl’s pain.
Most wedding nights in Somalia are aided by “the little knife” — that is, the new husband slices his bride open so that he can penetrate her now cut and bleeding scar tissue. Some men, however, simply batter their way through, tearing that tiny hole open by sheer force. When a woman goes into labor, she’s cut open more widely, then sewn back up afterwards so that when sex resumes she will have to be cut open yet again.
This practice leads to countless deaths from infection and a drastic increase in maternal mortality, but Somali men still refuse to marry uncut women, forcing mothers to have their daughters cut or face social stigma. Uncut girls are seen as dirty; the term for clitoris is a playground taunt in Somalia, and girls who are not cut are usually ostracized by their peers.
The Somali government recently debated the legality of this appalling custom, and the parliament largely split along gender lines. Female MPs roundly condemned FGM, while male MPs insisted that having a clitoris made a woman more difficult to penetrate, and quoted the hadith in which Muhammad condoned the practice. These are educated men who nevertheless claim that cutting a girl is necessary in order to control her sexuality, and that an uncut woman will be promiscuous and untrustworthy.
In spite of the Somali government’s continued support for FGM, foreign aid continues to flow into Somalia unobstructed. The West should refuse to give the Somali government so much as a single dollar until they outlaw FGM and take positive steps to combat the problem.
One tactic that has been highly successful involves showing Somali men a video of a girl being mutilated. Because FGM is seen as women’s business, most men have no idea what it entails. Men who watch this video are horrified, and the most common reaction has been “Not my daughter!” This proves that FGM is not hopelessly entrenched in Somali culture. Western pressure and resources could make an enormous difference in the lives of Somali women and girls, and put a stop to this barbaric practice.

Helping people who feel marginalized is good. He says so himself. The trouble starts when a good cause becomes an institution.
The first few witches were real. Then you open a witch office. Now there are salaries, budgets and pensions to justify, and the office needs a steady supply of witches to keep existing.
That’s the trap. Once a cause becomes a career, solving the problem means losing your job. So the problem never gets solved. It just keeps getting redefined.
A system built to find wrongdoing will keep finding it, whether it’s there or not.
