It felt like another piece of old North Carolina quietly slipping away. Turns out, we weren't ready to let it go. This month, Neese's Country Sausage is making its return to more than 500 Food Lion stores across North Carolina and Virginia. Regular, Hot, and Extra Sage will be the first to hit the shelves, with a wider rollout coming later this fall. But if you grew up around here, you know what everybody's really waiting on. The Liver Pudding. Jesse Jones Brand, the Raleigh company that acquired Neese's earlier this year, says broader distribution plans for longtime favorites, including both liver pudding and liver mush, will be announced soon. In other words, the part of the announcement that made North Carolinians smile the most hasn't even happened yet. The recipes aren't changing, either. The same flavors that have been on breakfast tables for generations will stay exactly as they've always been. The only thing getting an update is the packaging, refreshed for today's grocery shelf while keeping the history of a brand that's been feeding North Carolina for more than a century. For a lot of states, this would just be another grocery story. In North Carolina, it's the return of something that always felt like home. And somewhere out there, a cast iron skillet's about to get put back to work.
