You’ve been seeing very large #bumblebees on the wing for the past while. Why? Okay I’ll tell you why in this quick thread if you promise to #retweet as the more people who know that these are queens the more likely that someone will help some out meaning more colonies next year. Deal? 1/15

Yesterday it was Lisa Nandy telling us that the Brexit vote was never intended to be a settled question. Tonight we have PM telling us reopening the Q is justified because it’s been 10 years & opinions & circumstances have changed. 🤔 Do they hear themselves?

I strongly oppose the removal of the pensions triple-lock. More than 2 million pensioners live in poverty. They will be the ones who suffer the most by taking away pension security. We must protect the principle of universalism. That is why we opposed cuts to winter fuel - and that is why we must oppose any means-testing of the state pension. This isn't about old versus young. This is about the super-rich versus the rest. That's why we should be taxing wealth to fund social care for all.

This would mean in real terms every pensioner in Scotland being almost £2,000 worse off in 2050. This is unacceptable and the PM must abandon these plans. The Deputy First Minister wrote to the @ScotParl Finance Committee to update them on this analysis: gov.scot/publications/deputy…

In Scotland personal care has been free for 24 years. It has not impacted the state pension but taxes are a little higher here for the better paid. Now, Westminster will restrict pension growth in Scotland to help pay for personal care in England. You Yes yet? @theSNP

I have received the first official estimate of the cost to Scotland's pensioners of the Prime Minister's attack on the triple lock. It will take up to £4bn from Scotland's pensioners. And the Prime Minister plans to use it to pay for social care in England.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The £4bn is a Scottish Government projection for lower state pension payments in Scotland by 2049-50 vs the current triple lock. The state pension is UK-wide. Increased English social care spending would bring additional Barnett formula funding to Scotland. gov.scot/publications/d… heraldscotland.com/news/26595468.… instituteforgovernment.org.uk/article/explai…

This is three quarters of the 'voluntary' Union. Let that sink in!
An historic moment as the leaders of Sinn Féin, the SNP and Plaid Cymru come together to stand up for the interests of our nations and their right to independence. For the first time in history, three nationalist and pro-independence First Ministers now hold office. Today is a powerful testament to the enormous change, hope and opportunity of the times we are living through.

My Lord. @JoeBiden, 83 years old, battling Stage 4 cancer that has spread to his bones, stood for HOURS alongside @DrBiden as the names of 9/11 victims were read. Donald Trump fell asleep at the 9/11 event at the Pentagon. One showed respect despite his pain. The other couldn't even stay awake. Trump is an embarrassment to the nation and the office he holds. Really says it all.

These Gannet chicks were meant to be hunted and killed. But after the Guga hunters’ licence was rejected, they were saved. Now we need to make sure the hunt can NEVER return.

BBC reporting the PM is donating a part of his salary to homeless charities. Good for him. Anyone ever heard @BBCNews inform the public that SNP FM & Ministers donated ALL their pay increases from 2008 > & paid them back into public purse for Services to the people of Scotland?

One of the best things about Scotland is the tap water. Publicly owned, delicious, paid for collectively, & govt oversight and regulation of the pay of Scottish Water execs. Water for private profit makes no sense. Scotland shows there’s a better model.
My family in Essex had NO TAP WATER for 5 FULL DAYS. Affecting: Drinking water Bathing Flushing toilets Cleaning DURING the heatwave My Dad is elderly & my sister is breastfeeding a newborn! They should have compensation!! Not higher water bills! ABOLISH PRIVATISATION!!

The government has launched a public consultation on fireworks, asking for views. Fireworks cause needless suffering to animals, and we think they should be restricted to professional displays.

Scotland has just done something quietly brilliant for its birds 🐦 New buildings across the country will now have to include "Swift bricks", hollow bricks built straight into the walls that give birds a safe place to nest. It sounds like a small thing but it isn't. Swift numbers in the UK have fallen by around 60% since the mid-1990s, and one of the biggest reasons is heartbreakingly simple: modern buildings have nowhere for them to go. Swifts have always nested in the nooks and gaps of our houses, and as those disappeared, so did they. The birds themselves make it worse by being loyal to a fault. Swifts return to the exact same nest site year after year, having flown thousands of miles from Africa to get there. When they arrive to find it sealed up, some will keep flying at the spot again and again, sometimes injuring themselves in the process. The bricks cost about £30 each. They need no maintenance, they don't affect insulation, and once they're in the wall, you'd never know they were there. Sparrows, Starlings and House Martins use them too, all species in trouble for the same reason. One RSPB conservationist put it starkly. In his part of Glasgow, not a single Swift bred in 2025, the first time in his 30 years there. He called it "nothing short of heartbreaking." Scotland is the first country in the UK to write this into law. Campaigners are now hoping the rest follows.

I have contacted SNP leader John Swinney and Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth to congratulate them on their enormous mandates. For the first time ever, there could be three pro-independence First Ministers across these islands. More and more people are looking towards a future beyond the constraints of the Union. I look forward to continuing to build the friendship between the people of our nations, and to working closely with both John and Rhun in the time ahead.
