No words for the dystopia Hong Kong has become, where remembering the Tiananmen dead is subversion, and good people go to prison for organising civic activities that would be applauded and anywhere else. The @GOVUK says China is in “ongoing non compliance” with the still-in-force treaty that was supposed to prevent this kind of thing. But the 🇬🇧 hasn’t done anything about that non-compliance except leave it a few years and then return with a begging bowl. By failing to respond meaningfully to violation after escalating violation, the UK allowed China to push the envelope with no consequences. The UK has a duty under the Sino British Joint Declaration to uphold Hong Kong’s autonomy. We did not discharge this duty. We allowed China to crush it, and did nothing about it. These three convictions are on us.

Andy Li will be sentenced alongside #JimmyLai in Hong Kong tomorrow morning. Andy was tortured in Shenzhen, and agreed to become a prosecution witness against Jimmy Lai. He pled guilty in 2021, but was not sentenced. Andy volunteered with us in the early days of @ipacglobal - some website help. He was peaceful. He just wanted a democratic settlement for his home city. Before his arrest, we had discussed what to do if he was caught and persecuted by the authorities. Andy said he would “gladly offer himself as a sacrifice if it meant that people could be stronger in their advocacy for Hong Kong” In fact, they tortured and broke him. And now, when he eventually gets out of prison, his own community will shun him. We asked the UK Foreign Office to raise his case. As usual, they did as little as they could get away with. Andy’s story is a tale of complete self-emptying. He offered his liberty for his city, and was forced to yield his integrity for survival. I find it impossible to judge him. I weep for him. I don’t know how to feel about tomorrow. His sentence will perhaps be commuted, while the sentence of the innocent man he testified against will almost certainly not. This is what authoritarian societies do. They breed division and suspicion. They turn colleagues against each other. They seek examples of purity and spare no effort in tearing them down, so to diminish the power of their witness. That’s what they did to Andy. A purer and more committed soul it would be impossible to imagine. They coerced him into their moral abyss through torture, and forced him to play along in their fabricated case against Jimmy Lai.
