40 years ago today CARAVAN OF COURAGE: AN EWOK ADVENTURE premiered on ABC. Saturated in a bygone storybook whimsy, this STAR WARS spinoff is a charming oddity of the Lucasfilm dark age that I’ve always enjoyed. Everything down to the Burl Ives narration is spot on.

Mark Stutzman’s art for the McDonald’s BATMAN RETURNS collector cups should be hanging in the Louvre.

Over the course of the year I’ve been watching all 93 titles in the Castle Rock Entertainment filmography and sharing my thoughts on them in this thread. Follow along as I take a nostalgic trip around the lighthouse.

An early aughts cable thriller with Hitchcock's ROPE in it's DNA, Barbet Schroeder puts Bullock in the middle of a twisted if formulaic take on the Leopold & Loeb case & lets her play against type to mixed results. I still had a lot of fun with this & Gosling is also great.

A bleak, messy fever dream that somehow still functions well as a modern drug noir thriller played in the key of REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. Kilmer goes darker than he ever did in his blockbuster era & delivers the goods. D'Onofrio is notably terrifying as well.

I love when a film drops the dialogue in over the studio logo. And one of my favorite examples is in THE MAJESTIC with Garry Marshall, Paul Mazursky, Sydney Pollack, Carl Reiner, and Rob Reiner providing the studio executives’ voiceover. A well crafted introduction.

E.T. is filled with realistic depictions of children but giving a new acquaintance a roll call of your Star Wars action figures has always felt like a particularly authentic moment.

35 years ago today Jean-Jacques Annaud’s masterpiece THE BEAR was released in theaters. The film set a new standard for realistic depictions of wildlife survival in narrative storytelling. It’s a timeless classic that deserves to be talked about more today.

This was a killer little Castle Rock run for David Morse between 1999 & 2001: THE GREEN MILE, BAIT, PROOF OF LIFE & HEARTS IN ATLANTIS

30 years ago today RADIOLAND MURDERS was released in theaters. Unjustly panned at the time, I think it holds up as one of the most underrated comedies of the decade & one of the rare Lucasfilm releases not associated with Star Wars or Indiana Jones. Brian Benben hive rise up!
