Didn’t Wittgenstein chase this guy around the house with wrought iron
“How is consciousness possible? Human brains are basically like termite colonies—which are not conscious. A termite colony is made of maybe even a million termites—mindless little bugs [...] and not a single one of them knows anything about the larger project that they’re about. Well, your brain is really like a termite colony in that way. It’s composed of several [...] billion little neurons and each one of them is not even as smart as a termite, and yet their action produces Gaudi[’s basilica]. How do you get a Gaudi-type consciousness out of a brain which is like a termite colony?” —Daniel Dennett on the philosophy of consciousness

I think the deep idea within quadratic equations for high schoolers is the idea that every parabola is in some sense the same parabola

Logs/exponentials are probably a sweet spot in "deep" math accessible to kids. The depth being the idea that with some magic, multiplication/division can be "transformed" into addition/subtraction

Automation as the path to accelerating science makes no sense. Very little of scientific work is bound by efficient cause. A credible path must improve measurement, interpretation, construction (!!), and observation, all of which are difficult to automate.

The peculiar fun of having to give up every abstraction humanity has relied on since time immemorial. Space as made of points, time as homogeneous, both perfectly continuous.

Glad I talked the foundry into letting us bring a photographer in. With AI everywhere, there’s something pretty cool about showing Americans actually making things.

My view, which I've publicly held for a long time, is that nobody actually wants to do proofs about their programs (except a tiny but vocal minority). People instead want *confidence* in their programs. Finally, we can focus on the human factors we've neglected all along.
One heartening thing about the @AnthropicAI + @theoremlabs verification work: almost every PL researcher on my feed is excited about the future and seeing years of research put to use. Quite a contrast to the “AI is taking our jobs” mood I’ve seen in other communities.

The secret about "before math" is no one was using most of the results, did not care about most uses of the results. Integrating the most basic things we know about math into culture is what we should strive for.
