Bi-pack glow is one of my favorite techniques. It gives such warmth to older animation
This style of light doesn't really appear in animation anymore. You know it when you see it -- it's bright, hot and almost dangerous.
Our new issue explores the tricks behind it, and how one artist has revived the look for the digital age:

I used to give workshops on art & animation fundamentals at a university, but the workshop that students actually found the most useful by far was one where I taught people how to set small, actionable goals so they could decide on a direction they wanted and improve on their own
To claim there even are any fundamentals, or to claim that you understand the fundamentals, literally goes against that whole philosophy
It's a pet peeve of mine because I love to learn! Question the fundamentals. Question that there even are fundamentals. Be in pursuit of learning your entire life, and try your best to express your vision and soul. That is art to me.
Most of modern western art practice people worship (including Loomis, etc) stems from school of Michelangelo, which is Neoplatonism
The whole point of that philosophy is that you cannot know reality because it is unknowable
My biggest pet peeve is when people parrot “practice the fundamentals” to beginners asking for help and then never elaborate
As if there’s some magic list of fundamentals every artist agrees on
My very subjective opinion is that construction and anatomy is the worst place to start.
If I were to start from zero again, I would focus on composition and leading the eye first. Focus on the speed at which you lead the viewer’s eye. balance of contrasts.
