I was there, and I think the outraged and slighted conflated the poppy conveniently with the fact they walked in with flags in the first place. The talk of a *boycott* of Wetherspoons from the protesters following this was unintentionally hilarious. Hampshire Police did a great job all in all.
Definitely not true. It’s because the Blackshorts were out protesting, you can see their flags in the background, and the manager of this Spoons didn’t want protesters inside whilst wearing their colours.

From what I could glean, the pub was taking a strong line on mitigating disruption throughout the day. However, you'll note the poppy seller milling through the crowd (front of the image). He was working the crowd with his card machine outside the town hall. I didn't see any of the usual Royal British Legion ID on him, either.

Capital Post has this week taken everything from a live music review to Dan's Spurs v Coventry report. Even worse the shameful 'Europe Says' website has taken eight stories from the CNJ word for word in last six hours.
Local media world is shittier for the existence of these new sites like the 'Capital Post', which changes the headline but then wholesale rips our stories, sometimes word for word (and pinching pictures too). Unsurprisingly, there are no bylines, despite the earnest 'About Us' page about journalism you can trust. Watch out: opening one of its pages will pop ads up in your face.

BBC News is a good example of big cuts still to come. Today, it has told staff of 100 more job losses, saving £5.5m. That's on top of previous cuts of £25m and £1.8m. But it has to get to a total of £51m in cuts - so still plenty to come next year.
NEW: BBC confirms BBC Three, BBC Scotland, Radio 4 Extra channels to go, but there is an even more worrying development. After all the cuts so far, the BBC is not even HALF WAY to its £500m savings target. Some big calls to come... theguardian.com/media/2026/o…

This image from events in France overnight is doing the rounds on this sewer. I've not seen it verified so was curious to run it through an AI check. The new OpenAI tool came up with nothing, a surface level SynthID check via Gemini was the same. However, going direct to synthid.com for analysis and here we are. Now, the reports from Le Parisien are genuine. The newspaper reports that an elderly couple were allegedly robbed and left in their underwear near Place de la République, citing a police source. But there's an important point here, and one that X continually exploits time and time again. The existence of a reported incident doesn't establish the authenticity of an image supposedly showing it. Nor is an AI detection tool, or the absence of a watermark, definitive proof either way. Until the original source of this image can be established, it remains unverified and should be treated as such. It's an important reminder of how easily a genuine news report and an unverified image can become one seemingly credible story that whips up outrage and further hostility.

And here's another photo from France that's flagged using SynthID tools. This is the challenge of #journalism in the age of AI, and we're sleepwalking into this mess thanks - in part - to this platform and it's owner fetishising socially and politically charged outrage.

Now confirmed by @FullFact c/o @stevenowottny. There's a pattern of behaviour with content that floods this site during incidents of major public disorder, and AI is making it so much worse. xitter.cf/stevenowottny/status/2…
Lots of very dramatic imagery from France circulating on social media at the moment - but some of what's being widely shared isn't real. This viral image of protestors in front of the Eiffel Tower is AI-generated. Our fact check: fullfact.org/world/viral-ima…

GB News is launching GB Music Radio, a 24-hour digital station only playing artists from Great Britain and Northern Ireland, on 2 November. Chief revenue officer Ross Sergeant said this "gives advertisers something genuinely new". radiotoday.co.uk/2026/10/gb-…
