I hate to wade into geopolitics here but this seems unquestionably true, and I am deeply apprehensive about the likely consequences.
The collapse of local journalism is so far past the “crisis” stage that we may need a new word for it.

Wow, Miami will have no newspaper coverage.
Replying to @MarbinMiller
Miami is on the precipice of becoming a news desert – whether the Herald survives these cuts or not. And, as a Miami native who grew up reading the Herald, I hope it can thrive once again. We lost an enormous amount or reporting capacity today. (5)

Wendell Berry’s primary “political” message was that better living depends on better habits of mind, and all his modes of writing—poetry, narrative fiction, and non-fiction prose—were meant to model those habits and help the reader practice them.

Dolly Parton and Wendell Berry less than a week apart; so different, and yet both so fully creators of what was best about southern culture and letters in the 20th Century. Giants are leaving us.

Genuinely incredible to see tech bros absolutely flabbergasted by opposition to data centers after smugly pronouncing that AI would render so many jobs and so much of human creativity obsolete, after bragging that only their work and ways of life be unharmed. JD Vance telling people, look, you're just going to have to accept the Palantir surveillance state. Marc Andreessen bragging about how only VCs will survive the AI revolution and mocking the pope for good measure when he called for moral AI. And now you guys are just totally shocked, caught off guard that people have been paying attention to what you have been saying and hate it. They hate your vision. They hate your ideas. They hate how you look down on them. They hate what you think you can do to them without even having to bother asking for their consent. So they're doing the one thing they can do right now, which is oppose data centers, and you people are melting down because it's the first time you've heard the word "No."
The anti-datacenter psychosis sweeping through both sides of our national politics might be the worst mass movement I've seen in my lifetime. The magnitude of lies underpinning it, the threat it poses to our economy and civilization, and the sheer scale of its popularity are totally unprecedented. It should be an enduring national shame that the country that invented the airplane, landed on the Moon, and created the Internet is descending into superstitious panic at the very moment growth matters most
It appears that we really can’t have nice, or even decent, things anymore.
