Science is not some hobby that serves the self actualization of people in a publicly sponsored job placement program. It is the systematic search for truth.
Wow, over 1,000 mathematicians have now joined the Association for Human Mathematics (AHM), committing to: > NOT publish AI generated math papers > NOT work with frontier labs > 654 of them went even further to NOT even use AI in their research, at all

Americans know that our public education is dumbed down. All that our “educators” care about is maximizing the % of kids who pass a minimum standard. So the standard is lowered, and the stupid kids get the most attention. Our system so badly educates bright kids, it’s sad.
Striking detail in the big NYT piece on Taiwanese families adjusting to working at the huge new TSMC chip plant in Arizona: their surprise at the lack of rigor in US schools.

When I was a teenager, people of my parents’ generation kept calling Millennials “entitled”. I didn’t know what the heck they were even talking about. I didn’t have high self esteem, and I didn’t think I was “entitled” to something. Now I realize the Boomers were projecting.

A Westerner can travel to East Asia and return knowing less about the place than he did before he had gone.

It’s hard to get jobs, even bad ones. I’ve watched hiring decisions for low-skill jobs. I’d hire people who really need to work: mostly scrappy guys who are fighting to get ahead. Instead, managers hire random young women who already get money from parents/husbands/government.

The welfare cliff does not trap poor families by accident. Congress engineered a benefits system where earning one additional dollar can trigger simultaneous cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, housing vouchers, and childcare subsidies, collapsing your effective income by $5 or more. The government built a cage, and somehow we call it a safety net. Take a single mother in Houston. She earns $22,000 annually and qualifies for $35,000 in combined federal and state benefits. She gets a raise to $25,000. That $3,000 in new wages costs her $18,000 in benefits. Her employer rewarded her productivity; the state punished her for it. No rational actor climbs that wall. This is price control, but applied to human ambition. Every welfare threshold functions as a marginal tax rate that would make a Scandinavian bureaucrat jealous, often exceeding 80 or even 100 percent on the next dollar earned. This disincentive is the system's core mechanism. Dependency concentrates political power. Families tethered to benefit rolls vote to protect those rolls, and the politicians who administer the programs vote to expand them. The cliff self-perpetuates. Free market economists have traced this perverse incentive structure for decades, but the administrative state expands regardless, because a bureaucracy that manages poverty also survives by it. Genuine exit from poverty requires accumulating capital, building skills, and taking calculated risks. The welfare cliff taxes all three.

IDK who Shane Gillis is, but I identify with the Japanese on this issue. The women in skimpy skin-tight clothes are trying to attract men with no imagination. If I’d ever approach a girl in the gym, she’d be one in normal gym clothes with a pretty face, slim body, and no tattoos.
Japanese gym etiquette. Shane Gillis is a world traveler.

The USA’s national debt is $40.3T. I hate that. It means taxes will go up and stay high for a long time. Even more regrettably, a lot of this debt was wasted. We have too many welfare programs, Social Security being the most wasteful. (1/4)

The welfare benefits for “the poor” subsidize social problems (drugs, single motherhood, etc.), create a benefits cliff, and don’t really help people to move up in society. The benefits for the elderly subsidize bad financial planning and transfer income from young to old. (3/4)

I hope fiscal priorities can change: have more public goods and services that really benefit Americans; and stop wasting tax money (and increasing the debt) by throwing around free stuff/money to “help” people by subsidizing bad decisions and low economic productivity. (4/4)

I just want to vent. I decided to try an electric head shaver for the first time. So, I bought this thing. And, it won’t hold a charge! Useless! Never again! A bad experience can make me avoid a type of product for my life. That’s consumer revenge! I’ll stick with razors!

My gym got new treadmills, but they still don’t track elevation. I don’t see why most new treadmills still don’t have this basic feature. I can’t be the only person who cares about this. I’m more interested in the vertical than in the horizontal, because I’m a mountain guy.

A gym I used to go to (in another city) had these nice Woodway treadmills which did measure elevation. I loved them. One day I did a vertical mile (5280 feet).

One thing about which I’m very liberal and tolerant is the choices people make for their spouses/mates. There are people who will tell you it’s wrong to choose someone of a certain race or of any race other than your own. Some have weird “theories” to justify their opinions.

As long as two people freely choose each other, they’re good. Those who judge and hate their choices need to get lives. And if you prefer a certain race, whether your own or another, that’s fine too. Our species is so diverse, it totally makes sense to have some preferences.

Boomers think they “paid in” to Social Security because they paid payroll taxes, so they think they deserve the benefits “promised” to them. A tax is a tax. It’s just revenue for the government. People were misled into believing that certain taxes fund certain special programs.
On average, Boomers are getting paid more from Social Security than they “paid into it.” A lot more. Like double, and that’s counting inflation and interest. In raw dollars, they’ll get four to seven times what they paid in. So what about this compromise, to at least stave off insolvency and save billions: you get back what you paid in, but no more. Young families won’t be forced to finance a 250 percent return on your “investment.” That seems extremely reasonable, doesn’t it? It doesn’t go nearly as far as I would like. But it’s a very fair compromise. It completely negates any claim that you didn’t get the money back that you “paid in.” And yet I suspect that this comprise will not be satisfactory. Why is that? Because this debate actually has nothing to do with “getting back what you paid in.” The REAL demand is for a lot more than that.

12 is at the top of the clock because 12 is noon and midnight. If you want to redesign the clock to put 1 at the top and call that noon and midnight, then we can do permanent DST. But common sense says to stick with permanent Standard Time.
This pDST talk is absolutely nuts. I can't believe how stupid people are. Well OK, I guess I can. Let me solve this riddle for you: We have a clock. It's called the mother fucking SUN. When the sun is AT THE TOP, it's called NOON. You will NEVER be able to add daylight hours. You will NEVER be able to add "more sunlight in the evening". The only thing you will ever be able to do is look like an absolute fucking FOOL by trying to convince everyone that we should offset the clocks from real solar time by one hour. "Yeah and so that's why we should just rotate our clock one hour forward so that its permanently out of sync with the Sun, because I prefer if the clock says 6:00 when the sun goes down instead of 5:00, I have a 6:00 sunset fetish." YOU'RE A FUCKING MORON.

Doesn’t the body look wrong??? I don’t know a lot about sculpture. The sizes of the man’s body parts appear to scale up from bottom to top. So, it looks like the legs are small and the torso is big. The right hand looks bigger than each foot. Is this an illusion?
Looks like our statue is getting a lot of criticism. Some people are calling it “out of proportion.” I think there’s been a misunderstanding, so let me clear it up: the statue is, in fact, very beautiful.
