Thrilled by this: NYT call my new book, The Chaos Machine, an "authoritative and devastating account of the impacts of social media." "Utterly convincing and should obliterate any doubts about the significance of algorithmic intervention in human affairs" nytimes.com/2022/09/01/books…

Crazy that Lula did a national election-sized “call the ambulance / but not for me” while also kinda looking like the guy in the meme

The woman in this video makes an implication at one point that Lance Oppenheim is responsible for one of her clients receiving the death penalty solely because he reported on her organization in a way she didn’t like.
I looked this up. It’s a very weird situation. The group makes “mitigation films” for people charged with crimes. The goal is to convince a judge to give a much lighter sentence than they would otherwise be inclined to give. Oppenheim made a doc about the group and these kinds of films, but he got private footage by essentially making, according to the group, empty promises and stealing a password to their private video library. On the one hand, our prison system is often more about profit than justice. A factory can poison an entire community and the CEO receives zero punishment, while someone who was late to a parole hearing gets 25 years. So something like mitigation advocacy can be necessary in giving those with less a fighting chance. The videos are a last attempt to humanize someone in a system that’s very comfortable dehumanizing them. When they work, defendants go from facing years of prison time to mere months or even just “time served”. On the other hand, isn’t it kind of crazy that this is a whole thing? And that for many years people didn’t really know that there’s an entire industry that specializes in using cinematic techniques to manipulate judges into lighter sentencing? So some people are convinced that Oppenheim raised awareness. Others that he crossed a line and hurt an organization focused on helping David in his battle against Goliath.

personally I think it's okay that Nathan didn't pad out every moment of incredulity with like, details from whistleblowers. it's fine that he treats the case as already litigated -- bc it WAS! she was sentenced! he's filming her on the way to prison!

The Smug Reading Club wing of the DSA is launching a last ditch effort to torpedo the Win Elections And Improve Society wing of the DSA before it can commit the terrible sin of actually winning power in Los Angeles xitter.cf/CEAraos/status/2112559…
Replying to @CEAraos
I’m disturbed that instead of developing collective solutions on how municipal government can help end the genocide, there are template resos being circulated to chapters that call on members of LA DSA to be expelled for even working with the Raman campaign.

It's very funny that Lance Oppenheim gets exactly one line in You Can See Everything and it's to shit on the Prince Harry / Meghan Markle Netflix doc.

I was initially extremely skeptical of this: Jews are 9% of NYS, a +36R shift among a bloc that large would be hard to square with the actual results & forecasts. But I dug into the 2022 and 2026 Siena polls and it's as he says.
CNN: New York US House polling (Among Jewish voters) 🟦2018: D+40 🟦2022: D+49 🟦2026: D+13 (36 pt swing to the GOP)

This is a masterclass in using peoples’ own words to tell a story. @Max_Fisher’s simple storyboard is underrated and supremely easy to follow. While the title attracts your attention, the storytelling keeps it: “Israel isn’t stopping at Gaza”. youtu.be/GTL5trfjrdc?si=6WmX…

As the world's Only Fully Correct User of Letterboxd, I BOTH post overlong self-serious pretend-critic reviews AND have little lols at my pals' funny one-liners
Letterboxd is a fun website where you can have a good time posting about da movies with your buds or pretend you’re a professional film critic writing your newspaper column, but the people who do the latter get really mad at the people who do the former

LA is HOT. But does it have to be this hot? Did you know shade from a single tree can drop temps by 20° or more? Yet working-class neighborhoods like South LA, East LA, and the Valley get the least tree coverage and bear the brunt of extreme heat. Let's change that and finally cool things down for everyone.
