Games like this and the last few Chiefs games from last season make you realize just how insanely valuable players like Mahomes and Lamar are.
🚨 ATTN: @FTFonFS1 @getnickwright @CallMeDBlock @kevinwildes @DannyParkins re: sanguine. Professional wordsmith and rhetorician here. Also, super fan of the show.
Hilarious moment but both Nick and Wildes/Danny were actually right (and wrong). Nick actually stumbled onto a major linguistic truth that Wildes completely ignored.
Nick used "sanguine" to mean somber about the NFL season hitting the midway point. Textually, that's not right of course, the word has never meant sad or bittersweet. But Nick's instinct that the word carries a heavy negative weight is completely valid.
Wildes and Danny pulled the dictionary-lawyer move by correcting him with "excited and optimistic." That clinical definition completely ignores how the word functions today. In modern journalism/literature/politics, "sanguine" is almost always used as an insult. It basically means dangerously complacent, naive, or stubbornly delusional in the face of bad news/bad facts.
An example: “The front office remains remarkably sanguine about their quarterback situation, despite throwing three interceptions a game." Or “The Republican Party chair is quite sanguine actually about the party’s future despite its historic midterm losses.”
The writer isn't praising their positive vibes, they are calling them out for being willfully blind to a crisis. So while Nick picked the wrong emotion, he was entirely right about the word's cynical/negative modern connotation. Wildes got the textbook definition right but completely misread the actual rhetorical vibe.
Keep up the good work fellas. Absolutely love the show.
Dear,
Not Ryan and Bryan 🚨
Justin Herbert is fundamentally broken. Idk how to interpret any of this any other way. Help a football novice out here, @DannyParkins
Unlikely but man if this Joey Fagnano game is even remotely close @kevinwildes is gonna be pushing some Bills NARRATIVES.
Vibes Check for the Chiefs is going to be BRUTAL this week @kevinwildes 📉
It’s very early in his career but tbh the QB Caleb reminds me the most of is Mahomes. Minimal mistakes, mobility when it’s needed, clutch, climbs the pocket, rocket arm, rapidly improves deficiencies - all under an excellent offensive play caller. @DannyParkins
If the Bears lose @kevinwildes is going to show that cutesy forward hand-off to Thuney-turned-penalty about 10 times in a row on @FTFonFS1 tomorrow.
Washed Watch (TM) for Aaron Rodgers is officially back on @kevinwildes
Usually love @pablofindsout and have zero dog in this fight but the implicit bias in making no attempts to investigate if there was mistreatment or rudeness combined with clearly having a relationship with the store was all a bit weird in this one. No biggie just meh.
Can the next Sports Media Ombudsman please be about analysts calling god awful interceptions from Josh Allen “arm punts” please? @getnickwright
Legit question @kevinwildes: are you happier about the Pats or that Mike Evans looks like prime Megatron?
I am begging @kevinwildes to make this part of a running bit like the Pete Crow Armstrong Babe Ruth thing @FTFonFS1
