After years of gloom in the shadow of Donald Trump, Narendra Modi, Jair Bolsonaro, and others of their ilk, progressives and liberals around the world are finding cause to celebrate. On Monday, Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, defeated the far-right challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, in his country’s Presidential runoff. Between Lula’s victory and events earlier this year in Hungary, where the long-ruling nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was ousted in elections, the White House has lost two hugely symbolic allies in its broader right-wing global culture war. No clear winner has yet emerged in the Israeli election, in which Trump had endorsed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and which saw a historic turnout of Arab voters. And the U.S. President may be humbled further in next week’s midterms, as Democrats eye taking both the House and the Senate. At the same time, protests have broken out across the world. People have taken to the streets in India, France, Belgium, Spain, Albania, and Italy; among their demands are access to affordable housing, job opportunities for young people, relief from the cost of living, and greater investment in schools. “There’s no simple narrative bringing together all the separate uprisings,” Ishaan Tharoor writes. But across the world, on the streets and at the ballot box, the right-wing movement is facing a backlash. Read Tharoor’s latest column: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/-a…

I keep asking all of these American liberal pundits and streamers and YouTube hosts who are sitting around tweeting extremely vehement opinions about the situation in Brazil to come on my show and elaborate on those views -- just for a polite interview to ask them questions about their positions -- but so far none will, because they have no idea what they're talking about, and know that they know basically nothing other than a few inch-deep clichés about Lula, and are only saying the things they know they're supposed to say to keep their followers and subscribers happy. I don't know why silence isn't an option when it comes to topics you know basically nothing about?

Brazil just happened to be chosen by many Americans as a screen they can use to project their own, domestic political narrative, with no real regard or interest for what's actually happening here. Bolsonaro is not Trump. Lula is not Biden.

Wow! Canadian journalist asks Moshe Feiglin, a former Likud Member of Knesset, if he is concerned about Israel's plummeting global standing. Feiglin's response is chilling, as it reveals the fundamental supremacist view he and many in Israel hold. He says that the real moral supreme court is in Israel, ie with the people of Israel. The Bible says, he explains, that those who bless Israel will be blessed, and those who curse Israel will be cursed. As a result, it's we - Israelis - who get to judge you, rather than you judging us. And then he adds? "Are you with the children of God or not?"

CRUCIAL FACTS ON THE FLAVIO BOLSONARO MATTER: It's not just Flavio Bolsonaro who fled Brazil to escape the tyrannical persecution of Alexandre de Moraes and the pro-Lula wing of the Supreme Court. There are dozens of Brazilian exiles who have done the same: dissident journalists, activists, bloggers, and politicians who all fled to avoid certain prison for political opposition. In most of these cases, Moraes has demanded the extradition of those who fled and whom he wants to imprison back in Brazil. But Moraes' extradition requests have been repeatedly denied by multiple countries and institutions on the grounds that these prosecutions are politically motivated or otherwise corrupted. Among those concluing this: Spain, Italy, INTERPOL, and even the US under Biden. Just today, Italy refused Brazil's demand to extradite a person named @edutagli, who was once a top aide to Moraes, but then fled to Italy after Moraes accused him of having been my source in a huge leak from Moraes' office that I obtained for reporting I did with @Folha in 2024. That massive leak enabled us to publish roughly 20 articles proving systemic abuses of power by Moraes against his political enemies: exactly the reason so many Brazilians, including Bolsonaro, know they can't get a fair trial in Brazil. Italy today refused to extradite the person accused of being our source on the grounds that the proceedings would be a farce because Moraes — as he so often does — wants to act as the supposed victim, investigator, and judge, and thus his demand falls well outside of Italy's extradition standards. Again, multiple countries have concluded the same, showing what a farce Brazil's once-respected judicial system has become under the Lula/Moraes regime. Moraes has overseen a system of political persecution masquerading as criminal justice that has been recognized as a sham by multiple countries that are not exactly Bolsonaro allies. Nobody in their right mind who is a political enemy of Moraes would remain in Brazil once if it is clear that he intends to imprison you, since he has proven that guilt is a foregone conclusion and he operates with no legal or constitutional limits of any kind. That is why asylum under international law exists: to protect those who cannot obtain justice in their own country because the justice system has been corrupted and commandeered for political persecution. Many people, such as Julian Assange, have needed that protection (which Lula cheered). Now people need it from Moraes in Brazil. That is sadly one of the main legacies of both Lula and Moraes over the last six years.

Rien.
On bloque l’extrême droite ! #OnBloquelExtremeDroite

Brazil's Federal Police issues a statement that Flavio Bolsonaro is not considered a "fugitive" from justice because he has not been charged with any crimes and there was no order issued for his arrest when he left Brazil for the US. Part of the motive here is to explain away the embarrassment that Brazilian authorities had no idea what was going on in their country all day, but it is also true that -- contrary to many prevailing media and political narratives in the US -- Flavio has not been charged with (let alone convicted of) crimes and no arrest order had yet been issued when he left.

To say that Alexandre de Moraes is an authoritarian tyrant who has repeatedly abused his power to censor, arrrest and otherwise persecute both his critics and Bolsonaro supporters -- or to say that Moraes himself is more implicated in the Banco Master scandal than anyone and thus should not be judging anyone, particularly given that he deleted his own messages when Vorcaro was asking him when he should flee Brazil to escape arrest and justice -- is not to say that Flavio Bolsonaro is innocent. These are completely separate and unrelated points. And this is not a complicated point. It's exactly the same as the point I made about Lava Jato: the fact that there were serious irregularities in Lula's prosecution (in my view) did not mean and does mean that Lula was innocent of the numerous corruption charges he faced. The key point in all of this: there is no legitimate Brazilian democracy or credible Brazilian justice while Moraes remains at the center of the most consequential decisions. Until Moraes himself is aggressively investigated for the R$ 200 million his family got from Vorcaro and the messages he deleted, anything involving Moraes -- including his seizure of Flavio Bolsonaro's passport and his order not to leave the country -- is a complete farce and travesty.

Glenn, as someone who respects you and once admired you a great deal, I think you're right about many things. But I genuinely believe you should take a deeper look at the weight, or perhaps the lack of weight, you give to the far right Bolsonaros, its involvement in criminal schemes, and the attempts to stage a coup and drag Brazil back into a dictatorship. Don't throw your reputation in the thrash and don't help those who want to bring Brazil back to its darkest times. All the best.

Andy Burnham has met Muslim community leaders in Downing Street and accused his political rivals of using “completely unacceptable language”. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Angela Rayner, the Communities Secretary who began work on the Islamophobia definition, now repackaged as “anti-Muslim hostility”. Speaking to Muslim leaders around the Cabinet table, Mr Burnham said: “We want to counter any form of hatred, discrimination, Islamophobia, wherever we find it, and work with you to bring forward an agenda that says that to the community. “And I think perhaps the way the political debate is at times — Angela referenced some of the positions of opposition parties to us anyway — they are completely unacceptable. “And some of the language that they use about the community is unacceptable. “We just need to find ways with you to demonstrate that more and more.” This is shameless: another example of Labour accusing those who legitimately criticise Islam, its history and its practices of racism. It is also another sign of Labour chasing voters who have deserted the party in recent years — and sacrificing free speech on the altar of electoral ambition. Labour MPs have repeatedly branded opposition politicians who criticise Islam “Islamophobic”. Earlier this year, 26 Labour MPs reported Reform UK to the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) over its comments about Islam. Labour MPs also reported Conservative Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards and branded him “Islamophobic”. He even faced calls to resign from then Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer after criticising a mass Muslim prayer event in Trafalgar Square. This is madness. Read more below 👇

The anti-Muslim hostility definition has had a chilling effect on free speech. Since its publication in March, it has been used to silence people who wish to criticise, debate or mock Islam — including private citizens, politicians and comedians. It has made it harder to speak about issues such as Islamist extremism and the grooming gangs scandal. Labour has revived Britain’s blasphemy laws for Islam alone, by the back door, 18 years after Parliament abolished them. Angela Rayner appointed five people to the Working Group tasked with developing the definition. Each of the five members had troubling links to Islamist organisations, and the Government will not say who it consulted as part of its call for evidence. So who on earth will it appoint as its “anti-Muslim hostility” tsar? The Free Speech Union does not have high hopes. Labour is chasing the Muslim vote after hampering support over recent years in Muslim communities. It is sacrificing our right to criticise religion on the altar of electoral ambition. It is both sinister and shameless.
New: Angela Rayner has told Muslim leaders today that the government will appoint its Anti-Muslim Hostility adviser later this week

Can we stop talking about "former" intelligence agents and the podcast drama between them and maybe focus on real issues that matter? How about "independent" media covers the many disturbing developments courtesy of the government (and the broader global governance structure) is currently doing, which in many areas is drastically under-reported, and try and hold actual power to account instead of reality TV-style mudslinging. Isn't it supposed to be different than mainstream media? In the event these people don't still work for intelligence, they are doing their work of divide and conquer and distract for them. I for one am tired of having this dramaslop algorithmically thrown at me.

It's now clear that Kaja Kallas and Ursula von der Leyen have been pushed to the sidelines, because Moscow refused to talk to them, and the US doesn't take them seriously either. One might reasonably ask what's the point of having an EU foreign policy chief if, at the first serious diplomatic test, Western European governments decide to bypass the office and revert to dealing with Russia via national leaders.
