This is really great. Screening and ensuring oversight of DNA synthesis is key to preventing the spread of AI-designed pathogens. Next steps should be to expand this to all DNA synthesis (not just federally funded researchers) and get China to adopt similar measures.
Today, we released the National Policy for Nucleic Acid Synthesis Screening to protect American biotechnology innovation while reducing the risk of misuse. This policy establishes a new, government-wide screening requirements for synthetic DNA and the equipment used to make it. It will ensure companies selling nucleic acid sequences and synthesis equipment know their customers and prevent the malicious use of these materials and tools. This policy strengthens our Nation’s biosecurity posture by establishing rigorous U.S. government-wide procurement screening and physical security standards for synthetic biology. It replaces outdated “self-attestation” systems with robust, independent verification. It creates a dynamic, SI-powered screening layer that assesses the biological risk from nucleic acid sequences, allowing the U.S. to anticipate and prevent malicious use and help stop dangerous gain-of-function research. @NIST will issue rigorous new screening standards and @HHSGov and @USDA will certify synthetic biology providers. Together, these measures will strengthen American biosecurity, safeguard responsible innovation, and establish a global standard for safe and transparent synthetic biology tools and research.

give johnson one thing: He got a majority of the majority on this bill. a good result. But Jeffries got every single Democrat -- save one, who voted present.
🚨THE HOUSE HAS PASSED a bill to avert a midnight shutdown. THE BILL passed 366-34-1 170 Republicans voted yes, 196 Democrats voted yes. 34 Republicans voted no. A total of ZERO Democrats voted no. Dems saved Republicans here. NO DEBT CEILING -- House Republicans weren't at ALL moved by Trump's demands to lift the borrowing cap. Trump effectively asked for one thing. he didnt get it. "While efforts announced by the White House today to increase the availability of at-home tests and federal testing sites in the near future are a step in the right direction, they will not overcome all of the obstacles that limit timely testing." #molpath #COVID19 #IDTwitter
"The U.S. is once again facing a testing shortage, which will only be further exacerbated by FDA’s plans to pull what the agency deems to be “non-priority #COVID19 tests” off the market as early as February... Now is not the time to reduce laboratory capacity."
