With the Norman conquest of Sicily in the 11th century, the Normans started building magnificent cathedrals, abbeys and castles, as they did in Normandy and everywhere else.
And so, the Norman King William II, called the Good, commissioned the massive Monreale Cathedral on a hill above Palermo in 1174.
His reasons were also strategic. He wanted to display royal authority over the ambitious Archbishop of Palermo, Walter Ophamil, formerly the young king’s tutor, following political rivalry and a dispute over a royal burial.
William II wanted Monreale to be a grand royal pantheon and a powerful religious centre directly tied to the crown, reducing Palermo’s influence.
And indeed, Pope Lucius III elevated Monreale to a metropolitan archdiocese in 1183, giving it authority over territory previously controlled by Palermo.
And so there are two magnificent cathedrals in and above Palermo to admire today.

It's a major black mark on the Catholic Church that we've allowed Fernando III of Castile and Leon (1199-1252) to be almost forgotten. He's one of the greatest men ever to pick up a sword—and a canonized saint.
Fernando never lost a battle. He took back more territory from the Moors than any other Spanish king during the Reconquista: Cazorla, Úbeda, Córdoba, Niebla, Huelva, Écija, Lucena, Oriheula, Murcia, Arjona, Mula, Lorca, Cartesian, Jaén, Alicante, and then Sevilla. Along the way he reclaimed the Bells of Santiago de Compostela taken by al-Mansur a couple centuries before. In battle he always took the lead, declaring he'd never expose his vassals to more danger than he exposed himself.
By the end of his campaigning only Granada remained, and they were paying tribute to Fernando. El Santo planned an expedition to North Africa to finish the job completely, but died before he could launch it.
And, like I said, he is a saint, known during his lifetime, as El Santo. Fernando often worried his men with his habit of keeping all-night prayer vigils before a battle. His efforts liberated countless Christians from Moorish and rescued souls from apostasy.
On top of all this, he was a great lawgiver, patriarch, and friend—really the complete man, not the kind you allow to be forgotten.

In the 9th century Charlemagne established a bishopric in Halberstadt, Saxony, to foster Christianity there.
Today, there is a beautiful Gothic cathedral here, and also the biggest medieval cathedral treasury outside the Vatican, including a wonderful exhibition about medieval bird worlds I visited.
“Masters of the skies” — as symbols of power, strength, self-sacrifice, love and beauty, birds appear frequently in the liturgical vestments, pictorial tapestries and embroidered hangings.
Different kinds of birds symbolized different parts of medieval life and culture and Christian imagery.
The eagle, for example, was prized as an exceptionally valuable hunting bird, represented royal (one-headed eagle) and imperial (two-headed eagle) rulership, and was regarded as the winged Word of God.
