I'm now officially Dr. Merritt Khaipho-Burch!
I gave my seminar to the Plant Breeding and Genetics Section @Cornell and passed my B-exam on Tuesday! My next stop is @corteva, where I'll be a Research Scientist! Thanks to my committee @EdBuckler @CedricFeschotte &Wojtek Pawlowski

Please join me and the rest of this great panel, discussing how we as a community should not oversell research outputs whilst at the same time demonstrating societal relevance. Lots to cover!

Hey that's me! Don't sleep on ex-PVP lines for testing yield effects after transformation. Even though the lines that can be transformed aren't elite, the gene or edits of interest can be backcrossed into ex-PVP lines (with help from marker assisted selection) to test for yield!
Replying to @MerKhaiBurch
@MerKhaiBurch giving an excellent talk at #CROPS2024 about why we should be cautious of single-gene yield impact studies and advocates for using ex-PVP lines in research!
Thanks for the shout out James! The full paper from my talk is available at Nature! nature.com/articles/d41586-0…
Merritt Khaipho-Burch @MerKhaiBurch points to the problem of claims of dramatic percent increases in crop productivity from single gene interventions with limited/poor evidence in high profile papers. #CROPS2024
I officially graduated from @Cornell! I became the first doctor in my family and the first person on my mom's side to get more than an 8th-grade education. I now join the 0.27% of Indigenous and 4% of Asian (no Thai-specific stats) doctorate recipients in the plant sciences! 🌽🌾
A big shout out to @BeadsxBeans for beading my tam, @AIISPCornell for the stole, and my advisor @EdBuckler.
My photo even made it onto a @Cornell Chronicle article! news.cornell.edu/stories/202…
Woohoo! Congrats Dr. Taylor Ferebee!!!! 🎉🍾📈

Thanks @CedricFeschotte!
Masterful PhD defense by @MerKhaiBurch 🎓@cornell. A model of scientific breadth, rigor and communication! 👏Congrats Dr. Khaipho-Burch!!👏
Thanks @CedricFeschotte and my mom for these photos!
Apply to be a student speaker at this year's Synapsis Symposium! It's a great way to meet other grad students and Corteva folks!

Hey, that's me! Thanks @CornellSynapsis for doing a profile on me!
Apply as a grad/undergrad student speaker to the Cornell-Corteva plant breeding symposium this April! It's a great way to network, meet new folks, and get feedback on your research!

In case you missed it... make sure to read this article by Cornell Synapsis member @MerKhaiBurch !
My article is now out in @Nature!
It’s been ~1 year since my post about the flaws within 2 high-profile articles that claimed 33-68% increases in crop yield. Our paper describes common issues & suggests yield-testing criteria for future pubs. A thread🧵

My article is highlighted on @Nature's official X account and main website today! Give it a read! The link to my thread explaining the paper is below.
