Hermione Granger is supposed to be the brightest witch of her age, but the Harry Potter films made one huge mistake with her character: they removed her flaws and gave her everyone else's best moments. Book Hermione could be genuinely annoying. She nagged Harry and Ron about homework, acted holier-than-thou, and even got Harry's Firebolt confiscated because she was convinced it might be dangerous. Her intentions were good, but her behaviour wasn't always right. And that's what made her character development so satisfying. She gradually learned to compromise, while Harry and Ron became more appreciative of her methods. The films removed so much of that growth by making her seem almost perfect from the beginning. They even ruined one of her biggest moments in Order of the Phoenix. In the books, Hermione finally says Voldemort's name after years of avoiding it, standing beside Harry when he feels completely alone. It's a powerful moment of courage and solidarity. The films have her saying his name from the very first movie, making that development meaningless. But the biggest problem is how the films damaged the Golden Trio's balance. Hermione brings the intelligence and logic. Harry brings instinct and natural magical ability. Ron brings loyalty, heart, and knowledge of the wizarding world that Hermione simply doesn't have. Yet the films keep giving Hermione their moments. Ron explains what "Mudblood" means in the books because he understands the culture he grew up in. The films give that moment to Hermione. In Prisoner of Azkaban, Ron stands on a broken leg and tells Sirius that he'll have to kill him too if he wants to kill Harry. The films give Hermione that moment instead. Harry discovers Nicolas Flamel in the books, but Hermione does it in the films. Harry comes up with the plan to escape Gringotts on the dragon, but the films give Hermione that too. At some point, Hermione stops being one-third of the Golden Trio and starts becoming the entire trio. Even her flaws disappear. In the book, Hermione panics when the Devil's Snare traps them because she can't remember how to make a fire. Ron has to remind her that she's a witch. She's brilliant when she can prepare, but struggles when she has to improvise under pressure. We see that weakness again when Ron gets splinched in Deathly Hallows. Hermione panics because she can't make herself act as quickly as she needs to. The films make her both academically brilliant and exceptionally good at improvising, removing another important part of her character. And that affects the entire story. When Ron leaves in Deathly Hallows, it should feel like Harry and Hermione have lost an essential part of their team. But when the films have already given Hermione so much of Ron's intelligence, knowledge, and contributions, his absence doesn't feel as devastating. I love Hermione, but making a character flawless doesn't make them better. It makes their growth less meaningful. The books understood that Hermione could be brilliant, brave, and loyal while still being irritating, stubborn, and vulnerable under pressure. The films took away those imperfections and gave her moments that belonged to Harry and Ron. And in doing so, they weakened all three characters.
