The Royal Navy lost over 1,300 men in one night. 👑 ⚓🇬🇧 To a question. ❓ Where exactly are we? 🌊 Parliament offered £20,000 to anyone who could answer it. Millions in today's money. 💰 Even Isaac Newton doubted it could be done. 🧠 Then, in a Lincolnshire village, a young carpenter started building clocks. 🔨 No title. No university. No fortune. What happened next took forty years. ⏳ They teach you Isaac Newton. They rarely teach you John Harrison. 🇬🇧 Be part of us. ☝️🇬🇧 Be Proud Of Us. 🙏🇬🇧

How much of your day was invented in Britain? More than you'd ever guess. 🇬🇧 Follow one ordinary family through one ordinary Friday. Six things ordinary Brits gave the world. They won't notice a single one. And the last one, just before bed, is the biggest of all. 🎥 The little lights down the middle of the road. 🚗 Invented by a mill lad who left school at thirteen. So the story goes, a cat on a fence saved his life. The stamp on the post. ✉️ Before 1840, the person receiving a letter paid for it. One letter could cost more than a day's wages. A servant girl handed hers back. It was blank. The marks on the outside were a code from her sweetheart. School for every child. 🏫 A cobbler in Portsmouth taught poor children for nothing. He won them over with hot baked potatoes. Saturday football. ⚽ Arsenal began with fifteen workers who chipped in sixpence each for a ball. 999. ☎️ Born out of one terrible night in London in 1935. A call for help that never got through. And the front door. 🚪 In 1762, four of the King's men forced their way into a schoolmaster's home. John Entick took them to court. The judge's answer: unless the law allows it, nobody comes in. Not even the King's men. Not one of them was a king. 👑 They teach you history is kings and parliaments. Not that your ordinary day was built by ordinary people. Watch the full story. 🎥 People like you built all of this once. We can build together again. There's an old saying: "A mine is a hole in the ground with a Cornishman at the bottom of it. ⛏️" For a hundred years, it was true almost everywhere on earth. 🌍 Cornwall had been mining tin since the Bronze Age. Its miners built giant engines to pump the water out of the deepest mines. ⚙️ Then, in the 1860s, copper crashed. Tin followed. The mines closed. Families had a choice. Go hungry. Or go. 💔 Around a quarter of a million people left Cornwall. To America. To Australia. To South Africa. To Mexico. 🚢 The world called them Cousin Jacks. The story goes, whenever a boss needed another man, a Cornish miner would say, "My cousin Jack could do that." 😄 In Mexico, they brought their dinner. The pasty. Mexicans still eat them today. They call them pastes. With chilli in. 🌶️ After their shifts, they kicked a ball about. They started Mexico's first football club. Pachuca. Still playing today. ⚽ Above the old mines in Mexico, there's a little English cemetery. Every grave turned to face home. 🙏 They teach you Britain sent soldiers around the world. Not that it sent miners. With their skills, their football and their dinner. 🇬🇧 A little corner of this island taught the whole world how to dig. Your country did that. Hardly anyone knows. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Help us tell the world. 👇 proudofus.co.uk/support Be Part Of Us. ☝️🇬🇧 Be Proud Of Us. 🙏🇬🇧

You have a birthday. So does England. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 And it’s today. The 12th of July. Almost 1,100 years ago, on this exact day, England became a country. Almost no one knows it. The island was old long before it had a name. Farmers. Romans. Saxons. Then out of the sea came the Danes. ⚔️ They came to raid. They stayed to farm. And one hard question hung over the whole land. Two peoples, Saxon and Dane, one small island. Whose country was it now? Alfred of Wessex held the last corner and turned the tide. But he wanted more than a truce. One country. For both peoples. One England. He died before he could build it. 🔥 So his family finished it. His son took back town after town. His daughter Æthelflæd led the armies herself. A woman commanding armies more than 1,000 years ago. But it was Alfred’s grandson who ended the work. Æthelstan. In 927 he rode north and took York, the last Viking crown in England. One man now held every English kingdom. Then he did something stranger. He called the other kings of Britain to a bridge in the north. A quiet place called Eamont. 📜 Scots. Welsh. The kings of the north. There, by the river, they bent the knee. And that morning he took a new title. Not king of Wessex. Not king of the Saxons. King of the English. All of them. That bridge, on this day in 927, is the closest thing we have to the morning a country began. ⚖️ He made it real. One law, coast to coast. One coin, struck the same everywhere. On it he wears a crown, not a war helmet. Then in 937 they came to destroy it. Vikings, Scots, the men of the north. The largest army the island had ever seen. They met him at Brunanburh. Dawn to dark. Five kings fell. And when the sun went down, Æthelstan was still standing. 🏛️ England had been tested. And England had held. He left no son. He died in 939 and chose a quiet abbey at Malmesbury. Alone, in the country he had made. But it never came apart. Every king and queen of England since has sat on the throne he built. More than 1,000 years. Unbroken. You were taught 1066. The Tudors. The wars. But not this. Not the king who made the country. Not the bridge. Not the 12th of July. Æthelstan. The first king of England. And the one we forgot. Next year it turns 1,100. England has a birthday. And now you know when it is. 🇬🇧 You did not choose to be born here. But you inherited a country with a beginning. A name won on a bridge, 1,100 years ago. That is yours. No one can take it from you. Help us remember the king who made us. Help us remember who we are. 👇🙏 👉 proudofus.co.uk/support 👈 Be part of us. ☝️🇬🇧 Be Proud Of Us. 🙏🇬🇧
