Any serious scientist wants to know what is true. We may fumble in our attempts to find out, but our craft is always in the service of knowing what *is* and from there can flow all the discussions of what humans should do. The arrows do not go the other way.

I don't normally react to this account. But I rather feel there might be another factor here that is being left unsaid.
Conflict places more of the care burden on women and girls' shoulders. #Peace and security require more than their unpaid labor. Women and girls must be at the heart of peacebuilding. 🔗 See more on the @UN Secretary-General's report on #WomenPeaceSecurity: unwomen.org/en/articles/expl…

Men/boys are the large majority of combat deaths in conflicts — omitted. Boys also do care work — omitted. Saying women & girls must be “at the heart” of peacebuilding is prioritisation, not equality. Higher unpaid care ratios occur because men are dying or fighting. justsecurity.org/104722/gender-… ukraine.un.org/uk/download/20…

Obama tonight on his Cheesecake Factory line: "They mobilized a whole of government response to that joke. Not to inflation, but to that joke. The White House even called the Secretary of the Treasury. This is the man who is in charge of the economy. The person who's supposed to be figuring out how to make your life more affordable. The guy who's supposed to be figuring out how to lower inflation. And reduce interest rates. They told him he should hold a press conference in front of the Cheesecake Factory."

There's a strange thing that happens online and in real world conversations, where understanding or explaining an idea or phenomenon is interpreted as SUPPORTING it. As a result, people pretend to not understand things, lest they be seen as advocating them.

No notes. It’s perfect.
25 women and girls. That’s how many were killed 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙙𝙖𝙮 in conflict zones in 2025. #Peace must mean safety for women and girls. 🔗 More on the @UN Secretary-General's report on #WomenPeaceSecurity: unwomen.org/en/news-stories/… #ForAllWomenAndGirls

According to the same UN report, women and girls accounted for one in four of over 37,000 civilian deaths in 2025. Men and boys were the remaining three-quarters. The report notes men are still likelier to be killed. unwomen.org/en/articles/fa…

Hey guys? I'm not too sure we're gonna pull this AI economy off. "Recent estimates indicate that A.I. would need to generate as much as $3 trillion annually in perpetuity to return the capital extended. That’s 9 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product, or twice what Americans spend on food."

The first post in this thread had me wondering what argument she had against Haidt... but this post revealed that she's not worth taking seriously. Heritage Foundation? Old man? Over-the-top hyperbole? This is clown stuff. Glad she kept posting.

He is not some crusader against social media, he's a crusader for The Heritage Foundation's authoritarian tech policies. He thinks that IG Reels is turning kids gay. He's an idiotic old man and no academic who actually studies the topics he talks about takes him seriously.

We LOVED getting these on deployment. Kids would draw the wildest stuff and teachers clearly weren't reviewing them. They would draw Army men shooting people and blood coming out and then it would say "I hope you don't die." Everyone looked forward to getting them.
There is nothing more earnest or unhinged than kids’ letters to the troops

Wild.
“It’s not that liberals are more tolerant than conservatives, or vice versa. Liberal and conservative men are more or less equally tolerant, as are liberal and conservative women. It’s being a man, liberal or conservative, that makes the difference.”

The real reason the left hates Matt Yglesias is that for a moment he seemed part of the tribe, but then he showed he could think about stuff and that was unacceptable.
Yglesias hate is weird. His POV is pretty mainstream, is that his crime? His ‘wealth’ came after lefties chased him out of Vox—he dared sign a pro-free speech letter also signed by JK Rowling!—leading him to start a successful Substack. Lefties chased him into making $$ and now they’re bitter.

Clayface was great, almost exactly as I was hoping it would be. A nice little standalone film with echoes of the 90's classic Darkman and the more recent Joker. The cinematography was surprisingly nice, with lush sun-blasted interior shots all over for interesting lighting.

How many Americans actually just straight-up starve to death? In the latest data, from 2024, there were 22 cases. And not even one of them was about poverty making it unaffordable to obtain food.
How many Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck? How many are starving? The answer to both questions is--despite what you might have heard from the news media--not many. Link: cremieux.xyz/p/how-many-amer…

The "message" of so many Hollywood movies is so often just predictable feel-goodism that I think there is a LOT of room for surprise twists where a different moral point of view is championed. Come on, filmmakers. Have some balls. Challenge the audience.
