I grew up in an America that WAS great. A compromised grifter named Donald Trump came along and, with the help of foreign bad actors infiltrating our body politic through social media, convinced a lot of people that it wasn’t. Since then there’s been a proliferation of hatred, greed, fear, defensiveness, selfishness, anger, and scapegoating, all things that have no place in the America I know and love. We’ve been gaslit to believe that things like caring and acceptance and equal rights and being the shining city on the hill are for suckers and what we really need to be great again is isolationism, trade wars, to sell the environment to the highest bidder, and to give more $ and power to oligarchs. And that tiny, marginalized, and powerless groups of people are really to blame for all of the problems in your life, not the economic hardship brought on by consolidated oligarchical corporations and billionaires stripping your life for parts. There’s nothing measurably better today for the average American than 2016, but there are a whole lot of things that are much worse. Who things are much better for is Donald Trump, his family, and the billionaires who participate in his corruption. It’s been ten years and the promise to “make America great again” has miserably failed. The income and wealth inequality today are worse than ever. The average income can’t afford to buy the average home anywhere in America. An hour of labor at minimum wage can’t buy one pound of ground beef. It can barely buy one gallon of diesel. Remember “a chicken in every pot”? Now we’re being gaslit to believe that noticing this disparity and wanting to correct for it is “communism” and “socialism” and the destruction of America. Nothing could be further from the truth. What we are experiencing now is not capitalism; it’s an extreme bastardization of corrupt, cronyism that America has never seen. Where the wealthy and corporations reap a higher proportion of the benefit of labor, and are legally allowed to own and bribe politicians, while those who produce the labor and value can barely afford a tank of gas, much less to buy a senator or a Supreme Court justice. This Tuesday will be the first step back to an America that works for the 99% and not just the 1% and maybe more importantly to an America that I recognize again. I don’t want to “make America great again” I want to make America America again
