Jensen traces Taiwan's chip dominance back to an unlikely source: Philips, the Dutch consumer electronics giant he calls "the GE of Europe."
Philips, he says, is "the parent company that spun the fab that became TSMC, and spun off the semiconductor manufacturing equipment that became ASML."
The seed was planted in the 1950s by K.T. Li, who set out to bring science and technology manufacturing to Taiwan and lured Philips over. Then came perfect timing with the PC revolution: IBM opened the specs for IBM compatible chipsets, and Taiwanese engineers took that open spec and designed the chipsets "manufactured at TSMC and UMC." That is what made the PC industry possible.
A young Michael Dell just "bought motherboards from Taiwan, assembled them into a PC," and became a PC maker.

Two days ago I asked which laptop should be on the list first.
I expected replies. I got calibrations.
Two people I have never met measured a Dell XPS 14 and a Lenovo with nothing but the built-in mics. Everyone who owns one of those laptops now loads that sound in one press. No mic, no measuring, no idea what an EQ is.
That is Speaker Calibrator 1.2 for @OmarchyLinux, now in the plugin store.
Technical advancements: the bankstown dependency is gone. Everything runs on PipeWire alone, which means the best calibration per laptop can ship as an Omarchy vendor tuning. Your measurement can become the default sound of your laptop model.
Every calibration gets a score. Built-in mics get you on the list. A cheap measuring mic and a check get you to the top. Mine is at 71. The Dell is at 37, waiting for someone with a mic.
@SpencerGBull, time for you to start making vendor profiles for DELL laptops!
Looking at this @Dell laptop graph in the image the frequency response from the dell xps 14 is already decent out of the box. Nice work @MichaelDell

Just ran it on my 8th gen X1 Carbon and I can't believe the difference.
Same laptop, same speakers. So why should everyone measure their own?
Last week I showed what one press in @OmarchyLinux does to laptop speakers. Since then people have sent fixes from ThinkPads, Dells and MacBooks on Asahi, and that made the next step obvious.
Speaker Calibrator 1.2 lands in the plugin store this week. One person measures, everyone with that laptop model gets the sound. No external microphone needed.
The graph is my @slimbook Executive 14, measured where I sit: 8.0 dB off target before, 4.3 after.
Which laptop should be on the list first? Reply with your model. If you own a measuring mic, even better.

Beste rechtse medemens.
Extreemrechtse neonazi's.

You can definitely improve these shit speaker to a tolerable experience, with some harmonic fairy dust. But let’s agree that laptop manufacturers should give us better sound hardware.
Let me know if you like the fairy dust, would love to read your experience with it.

Just tried this on Dell XPS 14 2026, massive difference!
Bad sound is my one complaint with every non-Apple laptop I have owned. A MacBook sounds good because Apple measured its speakers and tuned the DSP; on Linux you get the raw drivers. My @slimbook Executive 14 is a lovely machine, but its speakers are no exception to the rule.
This is what one press in @OmarchyLinux does to them. The Speaker Calibrator plugin makes it sound better in one minute.
It plays sweeps, listens through a microphone (the built-in ones work, a cheap USB measuring mic is better), fits a protective parametric EQ and installs it as a PipeWire filter chain. Optional deep bass from bankstown, the Asahi Linux bass enhancer. Everything runs from the bar panel.
What you hear is the room, recorded through the measuring mic where I sit. The off/on switch is level matched, so nothing gets louder, only the tone changes.
@dhh and @SpencerGBull, you tuned the XPS 14 by hand and by ear. Challenge: run this on it and tell me how it compares.

Dit is wel het meest gekleurde artikel ooit. In alinea 2 zeggen dat het om nog kinderlozen gaat en dan alleen maar tegen argumenten over kinderzorg. Wat val je hier door de mand @NOS nos.nl/l/2630459
Mac has had the best dyslexia experience for years.
Not for much longer.
Omalexia turns @OmarchyLinux into a dyslexia first OS.
It reads to you. It listens to you. It stays calm.
All local. On by default.
@dhh your clean design got me into flow faster than anything else ever has. So I built the rest: the part that helps when I get tired and the letters start dancing.
Building on it has been a joy so far.

Just made my laptop @slimbook Executive instantly more enjoyable.
Fan's are stable now! Just fixed it overnight, no waiting.
Love the malleable-system of @OmarchyLinux, filled it as PR so everyone can have a better experience out of the box soon.
