One of the funniest moments in A Knight’s Tale (2001) reportedly happened completely by accident during filming in Prague. The production used local Czech extras to portray the medieval crowd, but many of them didn’t understand English. So when Paul Bettany, playing Geoffrey Chaucer, delivered his increasingly dramatic introduction of “Sir Ulrich,” the audience had no idea what he was saying—or when they were supposed to cheer. As Bettany continued his elaborate speech, a few extras can even be seen preparing to celebrate before realizing he wasn’t finished. When he finally stopped talking, the entire crowd remained awkwardly silent. That’s when Mark Addy, playing Roland, stepped in with an improvised, enthusiastic “YEAH!” His unexpected shout gave the confused extras the signal they needed, and the crowd suddenly erupted into applause. The moment worked so perfectly that filmmakers reportedly decided to leave it in the final cut rather than reshoot the scene.
