When someone dear to you has done you wrong, don't fake a smile when you see them. Keep it real. Let them know where you stand with them. There's no integrity in being fake.

My bosses in Nigeria, I would usually add “Mr” to their names whenever I addressed them. But I sometimes wondered: why didn’t they reciprocate by adding “Mr” to my name when addressing me? Or am I not “Mr” too? 🤔 Before leaving Nigeria, I had worked in four different companies. I was good at my job, and honestly, that was probably the main reason I lasted as long as I did. Otherwise, with my personality, I probably wouldn’t have survived two months in some of those workplaces. 😂 I was never particularly interested in eye service. While some employees would change their behaviour whenever the boss was around, trying to impress them, trying to always be on their best behaviour, and doing whatever they could to stay in the boss’s good books, I was mostly concerned with one thing: doing my job well and going home. If something was within my responsibility, I did it. If it wasn’t, I would politely say so. I was willing to cooperate, but I didn’t believe that being a good employee meant blindly doing everything a boss asked simply because they were the boss. Needless to say, some of my bosses didn’t particularly like that attitude. There were times they probably wished they could get rid of me. But my work spoke for me, so they had to tolerate my personality. 😂 Across those four companies, I was never sacked. I eventually left each one on my own terms. Fast-forward to now and my experience working at AWS in Europe. One of the things I noticed here is that respect is often communicated differently. It is expressed through professionalism, courtesy, competence and how you treat people, rather than necessarily through titles and formal ways of addressing someone. When I first arrived, I would address my boss as “Mr…” and he would sometimes address me as “Mr…” or “Sir” too. I even remember hearing my boss call Amazon founder Jeff Bezos simply as “Bezos.” I didn’t flinch. It didn’t sound disrespectful to me. It was simply normal. Here, calling someone by their first name doesn’t automatically mean you disrespect them, just as calling someone “Sir” or “Ma” doesn’t automatically mean you respect them more. In fact, I’ve noticed something interesting: whether you choose to use a title or not, the respect generally goes both ways. You can call your boss “Sir” if that is what you are comfortable with. You can also call them by their first name if that is the workplace culture. Either way, they are still your boss, and you are still expected to treat them professionally. That, to me, is an important distinction: Respect does not necessarily require submission, and informality does not necessarily mean disrespect. This brings me to the recent discussion about Tony who asked a junior colleague to address him as “Mr Tony” after she called him “Tony.” Personally, I have absolutely no problem with that. Everyone has the right to decide how they want to be addressed. If Tony prefers “Mr Tony,” then so be it. There is nothing wrong with respecting that preference. But it raises another question for me. If “Mr” is being demanded as a matter of respect, is that expectation supposed to work only upwards? Would Tony also address that lady as “Miss” or “Mrs” when speaking to her? And if he doesn’t, is that necessarily disrespectful? I think the underlying principle should still be reciprocal: Hierarchy can determine authority, but it shouldn't determine who deserves dignity and courtesy. You don't have to call everyone “Boss,” “Sir” or “Ma” to respect them. And you don't have to be called “Mr” to deserve respect. For me, the ideal workplace is one where the CEO can be approachable without losing authority, and the junior employee can be respected without pretending the hierarchy doesn't exist. Maybe that's the middle ground. Respect should flow both ways, even when authority doesn't.

Life is not guaranteed to be fair. Good people suffer. Bad people sometimes prosper. Accepting this doesn’t mean approving of it—it means recognizing reality so you can respond wisely.

I love that we dismantled the old myth that you need a traditional 9-to-5 corporate job to survive. Now we have three side hustles, a shop, and a gig app, and still can't survive.
