ALT "Welcome to Princeton University's energy and environmental newsletter. Reach us at [email protected]. Fast fact: 8% of global carbon emissions are from cement Research out of the UK shows making cement for concrete releases about 8% of the greenhouse gases that go into the atmosphere every year. That’s more carbon pollution than from aviation — roughly 4X as much. But maybe that can change. Princeton engineers are working on cements and concretes that are less polluting. Claire White is developing alternative formulas and clays that are less carbon-intensive and easier to produce. Injecting CO2 into concrete is another route, and Branko Glišić is monitoring the long-term performance of CO2-infused concretes. Their work could help build a solid foundation for lower emissions." At the bottom, a graphic showing that cement production accounts for 8% of annual emissions vs. aviation accounting for 2.4%.
