Tune vibrating screen parameters to boost efficiency and cut recirculating loads. In mineral processing plants, vibrating screens perform a vital classification role. Many operations treat these machines as simple mechanical agitators, yet screen performance dictates total plant throughput and energy consumption. Poorly adjusted screens cause undersized particles to remain in the overflow stream, which sends valuable fine material back to crushers or grinding mills. How can vibrating screen parameters improve screening efficiency and reduce recirculating loads? Share your ideas in comments. In a crushing operation, these wear parts will continue to accrue costs over time, and the failure of these parts isn’t necessarily a matter of bad luck. Most of the initial wear on a jaw crusher can be attributed to the operation of the jaw crusher and its setup in the field. By shifting from a paradigm of simply replacing parts to one of optimization in the operation of the jaw crusher, it’s possible to greatly extend the life of these parts and reduce the cost per ton. How to extend the life of your jaw crusher wear parts? Share your thoughts in comments. Prevent truck collisions in open pit mining: enforce strict safety measures. Heavy vehicle interactions represent one of the most critical safety hazards in open-pit mining operations. Powered haulage accidents frequently result in severe injuries, fatalities, and substantial operational downtime due to restricted operator visibility and dynamic pit environments. Extreme weather conditions such as heavy dust, rain, and fog further compound visibility challenges around massive off-road haul trucks. What measures should be taken to avoid truck collisions in open pit mining? Share your thoughts in comments. Vertical crater retreat: the mining method that caves upward. VCR mining is considered an advanced type of underground mining process whereby economically viable mineral deposits are extracted through efficient and safe mining while protecting the workforce from being exposed to unsupported open stopes. The mining process is widely used in the case of steeply dipping massive orebodies. There are three major aspects associated with VCR mining, which can be summarized by the acronym VCR itself, namely (1) vertical or nearly vertical nature of the orebody, (2) crater blasting based on Livingston’s theory of cratering, and (3) upward retreat mining. What are the advantages of VCR compared to sublevel caving method in underground mining? Share your thoughts in comments. Learning from investigations: Workers evacuated after gas levels rise. Seventy workers were withdrawn from Metropolitan Colliery, an underground coal mine in Helensburgh, south of Sydney, on 21 March 2019 after carbon dioxide and methane levels increased unexpectedly to hazardous levels. A supervisor on the longwall face initially detected increasing gas levels that appeared to be coming from floor cracks. Supervisors continued to monitor gas levels, and when gas levels continued to increase, the decision was made to withdraw workers and remove power to the underground parts of the mine, in accordance with the mine’s procedures. Remote gas monitoring systems indicated levels in the longwall return airway and the main return airway continued to increase. Peak levels measured 16.1 per cent methane and 15.9 per cent carbon dioxide in the longwall return airway, and 4 per cent methane in parts of the main return airway. Workers remained out of the mine for seven days until carbon dioxide and methane levels returned to non-hazardous levels. AI optimizes drilling parameters and predicts blasting performance in mining. Traditional drill-and-blast operations in surface and underground mining rely on empirical formulas like the Kuz–Ram fragmentation model and Maurer’s drilling equations. These classical models often fail to account for complex, heterogeneous subterranean geology. Recent advancements in Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors offer a powerful alternative. Blast-hole deviation worsens fragmentation, increases ore dilution, and raises explosive consumption. Blast-hole drilling represents a foundational precision activity in surface and underground mining. Errors introduced during drilling propagate directly into subsequent operational stages and cannot be fully corrected downstream. Field analyses indicate that total toe deviation stems primarily from alignment error (49.0%), in-hole wander (26.9%), and collar positioning errors (24.1%). How does blast-hole deviation affect fragmentation, ore dilution, and explosive consumption? Share your thoughts in comments. Grout-Free Expandable Standpipe: Faster Installation Without Grout or Resin The Grout-Free Expandable Standpipe is designed to simplify standpipe installation in tunnelling and mining applications. Unlike conventional methods that rely on grout or resin for anchoring, this system uses a swaging mechanism to secure a rubber-coated steel standpipe directly in the borehole. This eliminates the need for grout curing time, with installation and testing taking less than 30 minutes per standpipe. The system provides an alternative approach to standpipe installation where reducing setup time and simplifying underground operations are important considerations. 3D geological contact modelling reduces ore dilution and mining losses. Conventional mine planning makes use of simple 2D cross sections, manual drafting techniques, or fixed dilution factors (e.g., fixed dilution factor of 5–10%), which do not adequately reflect the complexities of the irregular or non-linear geological contact. This leads to the misclassification of ore as waste (ore loss) or waste rock contamination of mined ore (dilution), thus increasing milling costs and lowering head grade. How does 3D modelling of geological contacts reduce ore dilution and mining losses? Share your ideas in comments. 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆: How can numerical modelling technique can be used for simulating seismic effects of mining? With increasing depth, there will always be situations where stress, strength and structure combine to store energy in unstable ways around mining work areas. Some mining induced seismicity is unavoidable. The job of the planning team is to balance the compromises between production demands and rock mechanics driven sequencing principles so that all essential constraints – safety, economy and recovery – are met. Achieving a sufficient and defendable balance requires quantitative tools: tools that can differentiate various courses of action, as well as assess the underlying risks for each method. It is not good enough to simply rank possible scenarios or reduce the forecast performance to a single economic value, without actually determining if the bottom-line risk is below acceptable levels. In this paper, a numerical modeling technique for simulating seismic effects of mining is described. The approach estimates the energy released throughout the mine at each stope extraction step and has been validated for its intended purpose using data from Xstrata’s Nickel Rim South (NRS) Mine.
