lots of conversations about base over the last week. wanted to share my candid take after a week of listening and a lot of reflection over the last 6 months. first off - in case it’s not obvious, the first quarter of 2026 was a punch in the face. I spent 2024 and 2025 making a two pronged bet to bring base to the world: (1) builders would unlock the next wave of crypto adoption; (2) adoption would be driven by new onchain-native social experiences - creators, content, messaging. imo we made the right bet on builders, but obviously the wrong bet on social. builders did drive the next wave of crypto adoption - prediction markets, perpetuals, stablecoins - but social was not at the center of it. in fact, the entire social side of the market that many of us had been building towards - farcaster, zora, miniapps, and yes, creator coins - disintegrated completely. I was wrong - whether it was timing wrong (is $ansem a creator coin?) or fully wrong, only time will tell, but regardless, i was definitively wrong. the collateral damage was pretty bad! and this year has been an exercise in eating shit. we realized how our focus on social had meant that base had fallen behind in key areas that were now increasingly critical - we had perps (shoutout avantis!) and prediction markets (shoutout limitless!), but both were well behind scaled competitors. and we had a lot of room to improve in unlocking base as a platform for tokenization and payments that really worked for enterprises. people lost confidence, and CT spectators reminded me weekly of all of my mistakes as often as they could. it felt bad man, still feels bad. but if there’s one thing i’ve learned from the last decade of building in this space, it’s that when things feel the worst, the best thing to do is just put your head down and build. so that’s what i’m doing. I refocused my time and attention back to the chain away from the app, started writing code again, shipped a bunch of stuff (azul, beryl, b20, privacy, ledgers) and questioned a bunch of my assumptions: does crypto need social to grow? does base need an app? can base be bigger than coinbase? I thought for a long time that social was the only thing that could drive the sort of viral growth to get crypto to a billion people. unsurprisingly, I now believe that’s wrong. It’s clear that better money is more than enough - we are seeing this live with stablecoins, predictions, perpetuals, tokenization and i only expect it to accelerate. I am now focused on bringing a billion people onchain just by making global finance actually work. on the app, my focus is on building base into the blockchain for global finance. to that end, i’ve handed the base app back to the coinbase mothership, where my now good friend @cobie will be taking it from here to make it the best damn app for onchain you’ve ever seen, including expanding beyond the base ecosystem in ways that tbh i won’t love as the leader of base. it’s incredibly hard to grow a decentralized network inside of a big public corporation. and i feel like much of the discourse on CT over the last week is downstream of this. the following things can be true: (1) base (and i) love memes and (2) brian probably won’t ever bullpost memes on the tl (this activity is illegal once you’re over 40 years of age). it’s weird and we’re working through it as we continue to decentralize base, which has been our commitment from the beginning. we’re going to build base into the blockchain for global finance and do everything we can to be the place that the world’s money settles over the next century. we will surely have formidable competitors (welcome robinhood and stripe!) and people may abandon our cause, but we welcome the competition and believe it’s our duty to win the respect and commitment of those who rally to our banner.  in 2026, this concretely means three things: winning trading, payments, and agents. It’s so simple and so brilliant at the same time
this is just the most ridiculous AI application i've ever seen lol a Peter Thiel-backed startup that makes AI collars for cows is now worth $2 billion and the more I read about it the cooler it gets. here's how it works: every cow wears a solar-powered collar that talks to a network of radio towers and an app on the farmer's phone instead of building physical fences, the farmer draws the fence on a map in the app, and the collar keeps each cow inside that invisible line using GPS when a cow drifts toward the edge, the collar plays a sound to steer her, and a gentle vibration tells her which way to go. it's like how a car beeps as you back up toward a wall the cows learn the cues in a few days so now a rancher can move an entire herd to fresh grass by sliding the fence on a map, without driving out to open a single gate and that same collar is reading each cow's body the whole time. it takes five readings per second on every animal, so the AI can catch a cow that's sick, injured, ready to breed, or about to give birth before a person would ever notice walking the field so it's basically like WHOOP for cows too lol and they gave the AI behind it the perfect name: the Cowgorithm it's been trained on more than 7 billion hours of real cow behavior, which is why Halter calls the data its real asset and moat. they know what a normal cow looks like better than anyone, so they can flag the odd one out instantly it's already on more than 1M cattle across New Zealand, Australia, and a bunch of US states. California even used it on public land to graze cattle in patterns that clear dry brush and slow down wildfires costs about $5 to $8 per cow per month a job that used to mean barbed wire, gates, and driving the fields all day is now mostly 1 person on their phone

It is clear to each of us that there is no such thing as security, even in fundamental assets that are trending, especially as AI advances and risks emerge in the form of stress tests on protocols that are considered secure - tests that ultimately reveal they are not.

Wow
Ethereum is for shipping. Here are 24 things the ecosystem launched, shipped, and scaled over the past few weeks. 0/ @RobinhoodApp is now onchain with @arbitrum, bringing Robinhood’s 25M+ retail users closer to Ethereum-powered finance. 1/ @base launched Base Pay and the @baseapp, making it easier than ever for millions to join the onchain economy built on Ethereum. The app integrates with @farcaster_xyz and @zora, bringing together identity, payments, creativity and more in one onchain experience. 2/ Stablecoin supply on Ethereum, including L2s, surpassed $140B, nearly double what it was in January 2024. 3/ Ethereum turned 10 years old on July 30th at block number 23,032,825. The ecosystem hosted 140+ events across 6 continents to celebrate and @ethereumfndn hosted a livestream to welcome in the next decade. 4/ @rstormsf's trial began on July 14 and is ongoing. Privacy is normal, and writing code is not a crime. 5/ @Consensys published “The Industrialization of Trust”, a report framing Ethereum as the foundational infrastructure for global-scale applications that require programmable, verifiable trust, what they call “Trustware.” 6/ @ElectricCapital's report "Beyond Stablecoins: The Case for Ethereum" is aimed at institutional decision makers and advocates for ETH as a globally significant asset. Ethereum is for ETH. 7/ @focustree_app, a Web3 productivity app built on @Starknet, now serves 500K+ daily users. A sign of what’s possible when Ethereum scalability meets real-world utility. Ethereum is for apps. 8/ @boundlesshq launched its Mainnet Beta, bringing a permissionless ZK execution layer to Ethereum and kickstarting “The Signal,” a new path toward cross-chain interoperability. 9/ Google Cloud is integrating @selfxyz's proof-of-humanity zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), enabling privacy-preserving identity for AI and Web3. Another step toward a more human internet, built on open, verifiable infrastructure. 10/ @Fidelity published a report framing blockchains like Ethereum as emerging-market digital economies. Ethereum is for everyone. 11/ @talos_is, an AI agent designed to autonomously manage treasury decisions, launched on @arbitrum. AI agents are continuing to interact with onchain governance and capital. Ethereum is for AI. 12/ @0xprivacypools hit an all-time high of 300 ETH in the pools. Ethereum is for privacy. 13/ @TheEtherMachine launched with $1.5B committed to owning and managing ETH. 14/ @BitDigital_BTBT announced it has swapped its entire treasury into ETH, becoming a top public holder. 15/ @BitMNR became the largest public ETH holder, now holding 833,137 ETH. 16/ @eToro announced plans to tokenize U.S. stocks on Ethereum, bringing real-world assets onchain and expanding access to traditional markets through smart contracts. 17/ @eigencloud's Redistribution is now live, slashed funds can now be reused instead of burned. This unlocks more flexible, resilient incentives for apps built on Ethereum’s shared security. 18/ @PayPal now lets merchants accept crypto payments, including ETH, with instant conversion to PYUSD. They also recently enabled crypto for international payments. Ethereum is for adoption. 19/ ‘Built on Ethereum’ a documentary about everything built in the first 10 years of Ethereum was released. You know why you never sell on time? Because you want to be right - not rich. It's a subtle difference, almost invisible, until the moment your balance starts bleeding. You buy the token, read the threads, check who’s on the cap table, convince yourself you've figured it out. The price goes up, and that’s your confirmation. Doesn't matter how much it pumps - what matters is that it proves you were right. You’re not holding the token anymore, you're holding your own narrative. And that's why you don't sell. Because selling is final. And final means admitting: "That's all I got." What if it goes higher? What if you sell and it doubles after? So you hold. Let it rise. Let it validate your instincts. But the market isn't here to validate anything. It owes you nothing. It moves — for reasons you'll never fully understand. That 3x turns into 2x, then 1.5x, then a red candle. Still you don't sell. Because it's "just a dip," because "it'll bounce." You've seen it with $OP, with $JUNO, with $NYM — they always come back... until they don't. And then you're underwater. And instead of cutting it, you start rationalizing. "I'm long term," "don't want to pay taxes," "it's just temporary." But the real reason is: you can't stand admitting you were wrong. You didn't just invest in an asset — you invested in your own identity. And selling means letting go of a part of that. You don't sell because you don't know how to let go. Because you want to win. You're not investing — you're gambling with your ego. As long as your portfolio is in play, it means you're still in the game. Still early. Still maybe right. You keep telling yourself it's about conviction. That you believe in the tech. That the real adoption is coming. But really, you're just too attached to the idea of being the guy who saw it before everyone else. You don't want money — you want vindication. But money comes to those who act, not those who believe. It comes when you take it. Not all of it — just enough. When you lock in gains not because it's the end, but because it's enough. When you exit not out of fear, but because probability beats potential. When you treat your position as a trade, not a personality trait. The market doesn't reward knowledge. It rewards behavior. You can know everything — tech, team, tokenomics. You can sit in on calls, follow every update, write threads. And still lose. Because you didn't lock it in. Because you thought, "I know better." But the truth is: no one knows. There's no perfect exit. There's only the one that leaves you in profit. Most people don't lose because they pick bad assets. They lose because they can’t take profit on good ones. Because they’re waiting for applause. For the "you called it." For the moment when they can say, "Told you so." But the market doesn't care. It doesn't clap. It moves on. You either took it — or you didn't. Everything else is noise. Being right is ego. Being rich is execution. You want to be right? Sit. Hold. Watch. Let someone else win while you wait for the perfect high. But if you want money — learn to let go. With money, it's simple: better to be imprecise and in profit, than precise and empty. You don't sell at 10x, because maybe it'll be 20. You don't cut -20%, because "it'll recover." You don't rotate into something alive, because "this one still has potential." You're not holding an asset anymore — you're holding a story. And the longer you hold it, the harder it becomes to walk away. Because now you're not "in early." You're married. And selling feels like betrayal. It's a trap. And you fall into it every cycle. First you believe. Then it pumps — and you don't take it. Then it drops — and you don't exit. Then you cope. Not because the project is bad. But because you needed to be right. And all you had to do — was take profit. Profit is clarity. It says: I'm not omniscient. I won't catch the top. I'm fine with 70% of the move. And I don't care what CT thinks. I care what's in my wallet. Money doesn’t reward ideology. It rewards decision-making. You’re still holding tokens that are already dead. Because you can't admit you were wrong. And you're missing out on plays with actual momentum — because "they already pumped." You're not playing for profit. You’re playing for validation. You want to prove you "saw it early." That you're not the idiot who sold too soon. That you "understand the game." But profit isn't about understanding. It's about exiting. Some exit early. Some late. But only those who exit make money. The rest just watch and make excuses. The truth is — you're not special. Almost no one is. We all want to be the smart one. But the ones who win? They're just the ones who click "sell" when it's time. Without applause. Without glory. Just close the tab and move on.
