For anyone seeing the baseless accusations against me (& the sickening abuse), please read the linked statement. This is a politically motivated attack on the Cal Math Fwork, following the same playbook as recent DEI attacks. Please share this widely 🙏: tinyurl.com/jbdefense

What do you wonder?

So thankful that our state is starting to have conversations about fluency! And love that the resource we are tying to is the new Fluency book from @JBayWilliams @JohnSanGiovanni to start these conversations.

Love this for the beginning of the year: What do mathematicians do all day? As @TracyZager mentions, we really do need to make school math more like real math. (with all the joy, puzzling, wonder, etc.)

No more memorizing "negative and negative give positive". The power/flexibility of zero pairs AND the understanding that (identical number) subtract (identical number) is ALWAYS zero.(ie. "I have no (-5)! Get some! Takes a while to sink in, but has tremendous power when it does:)

I made a set of all of the 4th grade @openmiddle problems as a virtual manipulative in Google Slides.
Please try them out and help me make them better. My plan is to do this for every Open Middle grade level and subject.

Action 2 is about fostering math identities. We all have math identities that shape what how we teach math. Each of our students have identities too. How do we learn about our math students’ identities? Here are some prompts to learn more about each and every student.

I once thought struggle was something you react to. That it is unpredictable. The last things I would have ever thought is that 1. There is a lot of “prep work” for productive struggle and that 2. Struggle is something I should plan for… something to provoke. #elemmathchat
