Here’s the secret to building relationships: Actually like kids That’s it. No fancy handshakes, no dancing and singing like a fool every morning. That stuff is for show and kids know it. Just like kids. It’s easy. And if you don’t, find something else to do.

Not to mention if you put 12 year old me in a pod with the cutest girl in class there’s zero chance I’m paying attention to the teacher.
At a stadium, the seats are in rows facing the field so people can pay attention to the game. At a concert, they’re in rows facing the stage so people can pay attention to the show. At a movie theater, they’re in rows facing the screen so people can pay attention to the movie. At a church, they’re in rows facing the pulpit so people can pay attention to the service. Teachers, Why are you putting kids in pods with seats that don’t face you? Don't you want them paying attention to you?

I’ve aways phrased it this way: You’ll never regret going to the gym, but you will regret not going.
Before the gym, I don’t feel like going. After the gym, best decision I made all day. An everyday battle.

My entire K-12 experience took place in the 80s and 90s. I truly believe it was the golden age of public education. The number one reason? Little to no technology in the classrooms. We engaged socially with classmates, read physical books, and did exams on paper.

It should be scaffolded—newer teachers might benefits from a script or detailed outline whereas a veteran teacher probably doesn’t need it. As with most things in education there is nuance.
Actors use scripts. Musicians use sheet music. Surgeons follow established procedures. Why are scripts for teachers treated as an affront to professionalism? @ehanford explains why Direct Instruction uses them.

Everyone knows this is a lie, right? Right?! Right?!?!
Trump: "We have 5 states where your child goes off to school as Tim and comes back as Tammy 3 or 4 days later. It's true. And teachers make a decision. 'Goodbye Timmy I love you so much, I'll see you later.' And you say, 'Where's my son? My son is in the hospital.' Can you imagine? They don't even need approval"

My heart goes out to the children and teacher killed in Oregon. Absolutely heartbroken for the families. Something has to change.

A principal can suspend a student in-school, or out-of-school. That’s it. That’s all they can do. That will never change student behavior. Parents, it’s your job to do that.

It’s true.
We’ve created a school system where students who follow the rules often receive the least attention, while most of the time and energy goes toward managing those who don’t.

I think my plan is to finish the current book I’m reading and then start on this project. Should be fun. I’ll keep everyone posted!
I have never read a single Harry Potter book (though I’ve seen all the movies). I’ve thought about reading the books and tweeting my reactions as a first time HP reader. Any interest in that?

My daughter turns 20 this week and if you’re a dad of a little girl, hold her tight, spend as much time with her as you can, and always be her hero. They grow up too fast.

I just heard about the passing of a local teacher/coach who had a legendary career on and off the field. It’s a reminder that our schools are filled with heroes whose names aren’t known outside our communities but whom have an everlasting impact on thousands of people.

This sounds hyperbolic but I’m convinced that reading physical books, and using pencil/paper for learning might be the only way to save civilization.
Evidence on the harmful cognitive effects of TikTok, Reels, and other short form video keeps growing. It's not just the content, it's the attention fragmentation and the declining ability to plan for the future. From @juliejargon wsj.com/tech/personal-tech/t…
