My view is that the market is severely underestimating the risk of a backlash from Trump following the Democratic sweep in the midterms.
This major political setback could make Trump more determined to reassert strength and secure an outcome he can present as a decisive victory.
With the election behind him, the immediate pressure to contain energy prices before voters go to the polls has passed. The incoming Congress doesn’t take office until January, leaving a window in which tensions could escalate quickly.
If Trump launches renewed strikes, I expect Iran to retaliate extremely heavily. Further attacks on shipping and energy infrastructure will disrupt supplies and force crude sharply higher.
I see a growing risk of this unfolding imminently, potentially as early as next week. Even after oil’s rebound, I believe prices remain far too complacent about the scale of escalation that could follow.
