On Saturday, a Wake Forest receiver caught 9 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown and helped beat the 16th ranked team in the country on the road. Then his own head coach went on television and told everybody he used to bench him. Here is what Jake Dickert said. "He needs to start being talked about as one of the best wide receivers in the country. A year ago, we benched Carlos, right? And to see the kid pull through in practice and believe in himself? Gutsy performance by our offense." Coaches do not do that. A coach bragging on his guy will tell you he works hard, he studies film, he earned it. Dickert volunteered the one detail that makes himself look wrong. A year ago we benched him. So look at what Carlos Hernandez has done since somebody told him to sit down. On November 22, 2025, he caught 5 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns against Delaware. One of them went 93 yards, which is the longest reception in the history of Wake Forest football. Another went 79. That 197 yard day is the third most anybody has ever put up in a game for the program. On Saturday against Louisville he went for 194, tied for fifth most in school history. Which means the two biggest games of his life both rank in the top five in the history of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, and both of them came after the benching. He leads the ACC right now with 516 receiving yards through four games. Since November 15 of last year he is one of only four players in all of college football with at least 40 catches and 700 yards. Here is where he came from. Monrovia High School in California. As a junior he caught 71 passes for 1,594 yards and 23 touchdowns, the second most receiving yards of any player in the CIF Southern Section, which has close to 600 schools in it. For that he was a three star recruit who weighed 170 pounds, and his offer list was Oregon State, Nevada, Fresno State, Utah State and UNLV. He went to Washington State and caught 55 passes in two years there. Then Jake Dickert left Washington State to take the Wake Forest job, and Carlos Hernandez followed him across the country. And the coach he followed is the one who sat him down. Now the honest part. Nobody has said why he was benched or exactly when, including Dickert, who mentioned it in one sentence on the ACC Network and moved on. Take it as the coach's own admission and nothing more than that. But the kid who followed a man across the country, got benched by him, and then went and put two games in his school's all time top five is leading the ACC in receiving yards. And here is the part of the quote his coach chose to say out loud, about what he saw in practice afterward. Believe in himself.
