We lay down 3 conditions for the RMB to become a consequential international reserve currency without full capital account openess: infrastructures to provide RMB worldwide; increase in trade in RMB; dollar backing. Based on new reserves & invoicing data + historical insights.2/3
RMB reserves have kept track with RMB trade invoicing. Conclusion points to a multipolar currency world with complex geopolitics of Chinese & US financial links.

hear hear - last time @ecb went for fiscal police for European capitals, by incorporating credit rating and mark to market in collateral risk framework, it all ended in sovereign tears.
Put differently, its unclear how @Lagarde can link ECB support to fiscal consolidation if there's no agreement about what the pace of fiscal consolidation should be for €Zone's high deficit/debt economies. Limits on current spending (as opposed to inv) is one poss compromise 10/
