Why are Africans backing Mexico over South Africa in todayโs World Cup opener?
Letโs keep it real.
Many Africans are saying: 'If we support South Africa, they will think we are taking their jobs.'
This is dark humour born from pain. South Africa has been dealing with serious xenophobic attacks, against Nigerians, Zimbabweans, Ghanaians and other African brothers & sisters have been targeted, beaten, and even killed recently, all because of the narrative that 'foreigners (Africans) are taking their jobs.
So now the joke is: If we cheer for Bafana Bafana, theyโll accuse us of 'taking their support' too
Mexico on the other hand? They welcome Africans. No drama, no attacks. Just vibes. Football is familyโฆ but family shouldnโt burn your shop or chase you out for existing.
Who are you Supporting today? Mexico or South Africa?

Two weeks ago, I published an episode of my Global Dispatches podcast about how South Sudan was on the brink of a full-blown civil war.
Deporting people into this situation is unconscionable

I am taking actions to revoke all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders and to restrict any further issuance to prevent entry into the United States, effective immediately, due to the failure of South Sudan's transitional government to accept the return of its repatriated citizens in a timely manner.

In a major step towards boosting the countryโs economy, Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel held a fruitful meeting with a high-level Russian business delegation led by Victor Chemodanov, Chairman of the Russia-Sudan Business Council at the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Discussions focused on exploring investment opportunities and expanding economic cooperation as essential means of strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.
The Vice President reaffirmed His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayarditโs commitment to creating a favourable investment climate, underscoring this as a critical pillar for sustainable economic growth. "Our strategy is clear: we aim to enhance economic partnerships and unlock transformative investments in key sectors," he stated.
Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel also emphasized that the country's robust regulatory frameworks, diligent workforce, and abundant renewable energy resources make South Sudan an attractive and strategic investment destination.
The Russian delegation expressed keen interest in collaborating on joint development projects, particularly within the agriculture, infrastructure, and energy sectors. Chairman Chemodanov recognized South Sudanโs immense potential to become a significant player in the global economy.
This engagement marks a vital milestone in our nation's journey towards lasting economic prosperity, directly benefiting the people of South Sudan by driving growth, creating jobs, and enhancing our global economic standing.

No state in history has committed acts such as destroying hospitals, schools, shelters, and health centers, or killing children, women, journalists, human rights defenders, and UN staff, as #Israel has. These are war crimes, genocide, and ethnic cleansing witnessed by the world in silence. History will record them as crimes supported by Western governments, led by the #US, the #UK, #Germany, #France, #Canada, and #Australia

The Sudanese President Gen. Burhan was welcomed to #SouthSudan today, being received at Juba International Airport by President Kiir himself.
The political stability in #Sudan is very important for her Southern neighbor both economically and for internal order. Previously South Sudanese rebel groups had their sanctuary in Sudan and especially along the long porous borders.
In 2020, the Juba Peace Agreement for Sudan was signed in Juba. President Kiir helped midwifed this agreement to bring the conflicting Sudanese parties together.
The Sudanese Armed forces which are loyal to the Military leader control Port Sudan where the oil from the oil fields in South Sudan are exported to the international market. They are also controlling a huge part of land where the pipeline passes through.
On the other hand, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under Gen. Hamdan Dagalo also known as Hemedti controls most of our borders with Sudan, and especially key areas with oil infrastructure.
Juba has been maintaining a neutral position in the Sudanese conflict although there have been reports that various South Sudanese militias are fighting on both sides of the conflict. The Government has maintained their neutrality stance at least to the satisfaction of both sides.
What the two leaders will discuss beyond cameras will be of utmost importance to various quarters.
It's important to note that of all the Gulf countries, South Sudan enjoys a very cordial and beneficial relationship with Abu Dhabi.
