For most of this disease's history, "cure" wasn't a word anybody said out loud. ✨ In Dec 2023 the FDA approved the first two gene therapies for sickle cell, ages 12 and up. Not simple, not for everyone, but real. Ask your hematology team.

"I'm fine." In the PiSCES study of 232 adults with sickle cell, 27.6% were living with depression, and they had pain on 71% of days vs 50% for everyone else. Mental health care is sickle cell care. Ask your care team at your next visit.

Many early childhood education advocates believe that play-based learning can be an effective tool in building independence and life skills among young children.
A 2022 review of nearly 40 studies compared guided play to direct instruction – when a teacher delivers clearly defined, planned lessons in a prescribed manner – in children up to 8 years old.
It found that guided play has a more significant positive impact than direct instruction on early math skills, shape knowledge, and being able to switch from one task to another.
EdWeek recently visited an early childhood program in Lakeland, Fla., run by WonderHere, to help our audience better understand how play-based activities can help cultivate the kinds of holistic skills in children that will help them succeed in elementary school, and in life.

A water bottle on a desk shouldn't be a battle. 🎒 Section 504 is federal law, and the Dept of Education's 2024 fact sheet names water, restroom and rest breaks, make-up work and modified PE for kids with sickle cell. Need a 504 plan? DM us.
