MIT owes the public an honest accounting of what they did to David Sabatini.
In August 2021, Ruth Lehmann, director of the MIT-affiliated Whitehead Institute, sent an announcement that was widely circulated and reported in the press. She said a DEI survey had prompted what she described as an independent investigation that found violations of sexual-harassment policies.
The announcement publicly portrayed Sabatini as a sexual harasser. By pairing his departure with a commitment to DEI, it cast the destruction of his career as a demonstration of Whitehead’s moral leadership.
A jury has now found Knouse liable for defamation and tortious interference, awarded Sabatini nearly $10 million, and rejected her counterclaims.
The tortious-interference finding is central. Sabatini establishing causation from Knouse's actions to his losses was necessary to win.
Under a but-for standard which Sabatini had to overcome, if the same career loss would have occurred independently of Knouse’s wrongful interference, he could not recover damages.
In other words, Sabatini would not have suffered damages but for Knouse's actions according to a court of law.
MIT and Whitehead cannot answer that finding simply by repeating “DEI survey” and “independent investigation.” The sexual harassment and hostile work environment claims were tried and rejected by the court. Paying outside investigators does not purchase immunity from accountability.
They attached a devastating label to Sabatini and presented his departure as evidence of their values despite him being their most productive scientist at the time.
🚨 BOMBSHELL SWORN TESTIMONY EXPOSES A PREDETERMINED TERMINATION DECISION AT WHITEHEAD INSTITUTE IN THE DAVID M. SABATINI ORDEAL.
🔱 NEW REVELATION — Court-disclosed sworn testimony exposes that Whitehead Institute Director Ruth Lehmann (@REMLehmann) had communicated a decision to terminate Professor David M. Sabatini before he received the investigators' report and had an opportunity to respond to its findings.
The testimony comes from Professor Jonathan Weissman, a scientist affiliated with MIT, Whitehead Institute, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).
In his June 3, 2024 deposition, Weissman described conversations with Lehmann immediately preceding @DMSabatini’s removal from Whitehead Institute (@WhiteheadInst) and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (@hhmi_science) in August 2021.
THE TIMELINE REVEALED UNDER OATH IS EXTRAORDINARY.
🔴 1. THE DECISION TO TERMINATE — BEFORE SABATINI RECEIVED THE REPORT.
Weissman testified that Lehmann contacted him before the public announcement concerning Sabatini.
Describing what Lehmann communicated, Weissman stated:
🔴 “The gist of it was that they had gotten this report from Hinckley Allen, and that in light of it, they were going to fire David.”
The previously disclosed court-document analysis records that Sabatini received the investigative report on the afternoon of August 19, 2021, after Lehmann had communicated the termination decision to Weissman.
Weissman also testified that Whitehead had notified HHMI and that HHMI was expected to act first, affecting the timing of Whitehead's announcement.
🔴 2. THE TERMINATION WAS ALREADY BEING ARRANGED.
Weissman described the purpose of the meeting that Whitehead was preparing to hold with Sabatini.
When questioned about that meeting, he testified:
🔴 “My understanding as of, you know, the 17th or 18th, it was just a matter of when, and not if, and it was going to be soon.”
When subsequently asked whether it was “a done deal,” Weissman confirmed:
🔴“Yes. David was not viable at the Whitehead.”
This testimony places the decision-making process under serious examination, particularly given the timing of Sabatini's receipt of the investigative report.
🔴 3. THE INVESTIGATION'S ORIGINS AND WHITEHEAD'S LEADERSHIP.
The significance of this testimony extends beyond the final days of Sabatini's employment.
Previously disclosed communications from 2020 also document discussions involving Kristin Knouse and Whitehead's leadership concerning possible actions against Sabatini before the external investigation began.
In the court evidence presented in the post quoted below, we revealed contemporaneous communications in which Kristin Knouse and Nora Kory discussed using Whitehead's diversity survey to conceal an investigation already under consideration.
Those earlier communications, combined with Weissman's testimony, raise substantial concerns about the origins of the investigation, the independence of institutional decision-making, and whether Sabatini was afforded a meaningful opportunity to respond before the decision to remove him was made.
🔴 4. AN INSTITUTIONAL PROCESS WITH DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES.
On August 20, 2021, Sabatini's association with Whitehead Institute and HHMI ended.
The consequences extended far beyond those institutions, affecting his scientific career, professional affiliations, and reputation.
The subsequent proceedings at MIT culminated in a recommendation to revoke his tenure in April 2022, after which he resigned.
The scientific community deserves a full accounting of how these consequential decisions were reached, who participated in them, and whether the applicable procedures were followed.
Full accountability is essential for any misconduct established by the evidence, including improper institutional influence or denial of procedural fairness that contributed to Professor Sabatini's devastating ordeal.

Talarico’s answer: Musk’s net worth is a “spiritual sickness,” and the rich should pay something closer to the 1950s rate of 90%.
BARTLETT: “What would you have done to stop [Elon from becoming a trillionaire]?”
TALARICO: “We at one point in this country, we had, I think it was in the 1950s, had a top marginal tax rate of 90%. I don’t think it needs to be that high, but we used to have a political system and an economic system that more fairly distributed the fruits of our labor.”
“And I think the thing that really upsets people, particularly about the Elon example, is that Tesla was successful because of taxpayer dollars, right? Tesla got investment from the federal government, which is why it has been so successful.”
CONTEXT: The taxpayer dollars Tesla received were a LOAN from the Department of Energy in 2010. Ford got $5,900,000,000, and Nissan got $1,400,000,000 from the same program.
But Tesla did something those automakers hadn’t. It repaid the full $465,000,000 it had borrowed, with interest, 9 years ahead of schedule, becoming the first automaker in the program to pay its loan back in full.

DSA candidate Tim Denson tries to sell the crowd on “democratizing the workplace” and says Walmart should belong to the workers.
Big mistake. The guy 6 ft away from him grew up in Venezuela. And he’s heard this communist fairy tale before.
DANIEL DI MARTINO: “So you want to take it [Walmart] from its owners and have the workers do what?”
TIM DENSON: “I want the workers to own it and get paid better and have better benefits and be able to provide better lives for their families.”
DI MARTINO: “We can buy shares in Walmart right now. In fact, all of the SpaceX workers became millionaires overnight.”
“You can start a workers’ cooperative right now. It’s legal, but under a socialist country, you’re not allowed to own your own property and start your own private corporation.”
Denson tried to refute Di Martino’s point. Then Di Martino dropped this line on him:
DI MARTINO: “It’s very easy to be a socialist in a capitalist country. It’s illegal to be a capitalist in a socialist country. That is the difference.”
[audience applause]
Then it got personal:
DI MARTINO: “When I had to go to the grocery store, Tim, I had to put my fingerprint in a scanning machine so that they would tell me what I was allowed to purchase.”
“And I could only go Mondays and Saturdays because we have to ration food, because that’s what happens when there’s no profit motive and the farmers, their food is confiscated because they had to sell it to the government and everybody else at the price the government tells the farmers.”
“My mom made chocolate bonbons for parties.”
“Well, people have a right to chocolate, so we had a price control on chocolate.”
“So my mom had to buy counterfeit chocolate, put it in black bags as if we were cocaine drug dealers. That’s what socialism was in Venezuela. That’s what worker ownership of the means of production is.”
“Where has it ever worked?”
Denson had no answer. Because there isn’t one.

Bill Maher Challenges Charlie Rose: “Islam is not like other religions. It is a unique threat.”
Bill Maher: I think liberals should stop booing me for pointing out that Islam is not like other religions, that it is a unique threat.
Charlie Rose: But it's not Islam you're against.
Bill Maher: Howard Dean said, “The people in ISIS... I'm about as Islamic as they are,” distancing the vast numbers of Muslims around the world from it. That's just not true.
Charlie Rose: It is true.
Bill Maher: It is not true, Charlie. There is a connecting tissue between
Charlie Rose: You mean behind every Muslim is a future member of some radical
Bill Maher: Let me finish.
There are illiberal beliefs held by vast numbers of Muslims that I don't think have
Charlie Rose: Vast numbers of Christians, too.
Bill Maher: No, that's not true.
Vast numbers of Christians don't believe that if you leave Christianity, you should be killed. They don't treat women as second-class citizens, and they don't believe drawing Jesus should get you killed.
Does ISIS kill people indiscriminately who aren't like them? Yes.
Would most Muslims do that or condone it? No.
But most Muslims in the world do condone violence just for what you think.
Charlie Rose: How do you know that?
Bill Maher: First of all, they say it. There's a Pew poll of Egypt where 82% said stoning was the appropriate punishment for adultery, and over 80% thought death was appropriate for leaving Islam.
So to claim this religion is like other religions is naive and wrong.
Saudi Arabia has also beheaded people for nonviolent crimes, including homosexuality.
Charlie Rose: They even cut the hands off a thief.
Bill Maher: Right. We're upset when ISIS beheads people, as we should be, but Saudi Arabia does it too, and they're our friends because they have oil.
This is the centre of the religion. In Mecca, non-Muslims aren't even allowed into the holy part of the city.
If people were being beheaded in Vatican City, don't you think there'd be a bigger outcry?
This is the soft bigotry of low expectations. When Muslim people do or believe things we consider extreme, it's somehow not discussed nearly as much.
Charlie Rose: I don't believe what we see with ISIS represents Islam. I don't think the Quran teaches them to do this.
Bill Maher: Well, you're wrong about that. The Quran absolutely has horrible things about how infidels should be treated.
And can we really say women are treated equally in the Muslim world?
Their testimony in court is often counted as half. They may need permission to leave the house, and women are forced to wear burqas.
And I hear liberals say, “Well, they want to.”
They've been brainwashed.

A nurse tries to trap Matt Walsh on abortion, demanding to know why he’d force a 13-year-old to give birth to her rapist’s child.
Then Walsh asks him one medical question, and the nurse wants to run away.
NURSE: “Why do you believe that a 13-year-old should be forced to give birth to their rapist’s child?”
WALSH: “I don’t think that it is ever okay to kill a child.”
Then he flips it.
WALSH: “You’re the medical expert. The unborn child, is that a human being or not?”
NURSE: “That is a religious question.”
WALSH: “It’s not a religious question. It’s a medical question. What is it if it’s not a human being?”
NURSE: “Medically speaking, we don’t consider it a full-fledged human being.”
WALSH: “What do you mean full-fledged?”
Instead of answering, the nurse pivots: why don’t we have “conception certificates”? Or “a heartbeat certificate”?
Walsh even agrees to the heartbeat certificate. But he keeps coming back to the one question.
“Is the unborn child a human being or not?”
Eventually, the nurse tries to bail.
NURSE: “I appreciate your time.”
WALSH: “No, no, no. Come back. Come back here.”
“You’re the medical expert, and you won’t even tell us what a human being is. I’m starting to get concerned.”
[crowd laughs]
Then Walsh sums it up:
“You have one side that can answer directly. It’s never okay to directly and intentionally kill a human child. That was my answer. I think I gave it probably 15, 20 times.
“And then you have the other side that has no answer at all to this question. What is a human child? Can’t even answer it.”
The nurse knew the answer. That’s why he left.

Two options, bad and worse:
Bad) Let's say we learn to create consciousness with chips and AI. We copy 'you' over to the cloud. But OG you is still there. So it's not that *you* are immortal; it's that there's a copy of you that is. And yes, I know that OG you was already always changing, and the you of age 10 is not the same as the you of age 50. But it's still one continuous timeline of youness. And, importantly, this new copy almost certainly isn't a completely accurate duplicate of your mind. Whatever consciousness you've created—without a body, using different tools—seems guaranteed to *feel* different from the perspective of this new version of 'you.' If it makes OG you feel good to have some substantially altered copy of you go on to infinity, ok, but it's not you. You are still dying.
Worse) We learn to create a machine that sounds conscious, that *says* it's conscious, but has no subjective experience of consciousness, something with no there there. So you, aware, full of life and emotions, create an empty shell version of you that feels nothing and has no subjective consciousness. And as all our human bodies fade away, digital emptiness goes on to populate the future, forever.
