Can I push back on the whole "don't grade formative assessments thing"? Hear me out... 1/

We don't need to weight formatives less. We need to be asking why we are using points and averages over time to determine a grade. We need to recognize that the most commonly-used grading system in US schools is flawed, hinders learning, and disadvantages specific groups. 11/

We need to be looking for a better way, not looking to minimize the harm of the current way. This is why I hate the conversation about grading formatives. It misses the mark. It thinks small. It is a limiting discussion in a world of possibilities. 12/12

Some of my favorite shots from the past week. I love the difference the light makes as the sun drops behind the hills.

Might get me in trouble... UDL and inclusion without assessment reform is an unnecessary, unproductive, and undue burden on the back of teachers.

Dopamine causes us to think about the future (good), but it also hinders our ability to enjoy the present (bad). This used to not be a problem, but in a world engineered to drive our behavior by hijacking our dopamine system, it makes sense so many people are unhappy.

Just wrote a piece about why the education system does a disservice by demonizing extrinsic motivation. It's an oversimplified view that can actually harm students, specifically students who struggle in school. To be clear, no, using grades as motivators still doesn't work.

While I've been doing lots of writing for other organizations recently, this is the first time in a long while that I wrote something simply because it was on my heart and mind, and I just needed to get it out. On A.I., the environment, and what we value: tylerrablin.com/blog/ai-amp-…

Proof of life: I'm still here. My wife and I took a leave of absence from our jobs this year to pursue our passions and travel. I'm still doing lots of writing, working with schools, and pumped to return to education, but holy smokes, the world is amazing and worth protecting.
