If youβre lucky enough to learn a new language in school, youβll discover new worlds, new adventures. Youβll make new connections, take a different view of life. Youβll see everything through a different filter. Youβll have βaccess all areasβ. You gain a lot with a new language.
The National Language Competition (NLC) is a virtual competition for teams of 13-14 year olds from around the UK to compete against each other to solve language-based challenges.
π This year, the #NLC2026 runs from 16-20 November.

French, German and Spanish opened doors to friendships in Spain, adventures in Kosovo and a lifetime of seeing the world differently. To every student: be curious, be brave, learn a language and discover just how far it can take you. Your next adventure starts with one new word.

Whichever language you learn in school is the start of a lifelong adventure, the key to a whole new world, the difference between connection and isolation, the recipe for new discoveries, the bonus points in every game. French, German, Spanish and more, your stories start here.
Languages are a fundamental cog in the wheel, which enable us to carry out our mission, at home and across the world.
#DidYouKnow that across our teams, we can speak over 42 different languages and dialects?

When you cut university language courses, not only are you limiting studentsβ opportunities, but youβre cutting off connections, narrowing outlooks, denying a wealth of experiences, and making the world smaller. The immeasurable value added by languages far outweighs the cost.

You can do languages if you're curious about how other people see the world, if you want to live experiences to the fullest, if you long to share songs and stories, if you aim to influence and persuade, if you're looking to connect across borders. Languages are for everyone.
We've asked our brilliant linguist community to tell us their favourite phrases and idioms from the many languages that we delve into.

Happy European Day of Languages! For me, one language has always led to another - from school French, German and Spanish to Romanian, Albanian and beyond. Each has brought new friendships, journeys, laughs, music, food and ways of seeing the world. Learn a language. Open a world.

French opens doors to diplomacy and culture; German to science and philosophy. Spanish connects continents. Italian brings music and art to life. Latin sharpens our understanding. Every language offers a different way of seeing the world, and that may be its greatest gift.

Imagine learning a language and suddenly being able to understand the song everyone else is singing, chat with people youβd never otherwise meet, travel somewhere new and feel like you belong, and unlock opportunities you never knew existed. Another language changes your world.

I learned Spanish, French, German, Italian & Latin at school without knowing where they would lead. Spanish was a new world; Albanian brought new directions; Farsi and Mandarin grew horizons. Languages change the people you meet, the places you discover and the life you envisage.

What happens when we close the door on languages? Let's not be the generation that closes the door before others have had the chance to discover what lies beyond it. I know where languages took me, and I wouldn't want anyone else to miss out on that. albarolanguages.com/2026/09/β¦

If you close language departments, remove opportunities for language courses, & make it harder for students to spend a year abroad, you limit connections, deny young people the chance to expand their world, and lose the stories & adventures that only another language can create.

Life without another language is like a hallway of unopened doors, a room full of people eager to meet, a monochrome world waiting for colour, a story that's missing its ending. Learn another language, and the doors don't just open. A whole new world is waiting on the other side.
