Part of the reason political coverage is broken is because the media constantly frames it like it’s a sporting event, which greatly diminishes its importance. The people debating last night are vying to hold the most important position in this country, and frankly a lot of what was said was dangerous. Present it that way.

This is the most pernicious belief about African people who were enslaved. It is, intentionally or not, how we justify the sins of slavery: The belief that Africans had no particular knowledge or skills or value outside of brute labor. It's ahistorical and illogical.
