Colorado, here I come! 🏔️🔥
I’m excited to share that my session, Peaks of the Past, Frontiers of the Future: Investigating Swamp Fires Through NGSS Phenomena, has been accepted for the 2026 Colorado Science Conference on November 6, 2026!
Bringing a little Louisiana science to Colorado! Let’s investigate swamp fires and explore how real-world phenomena spark questions, evidence-based thinking, and student sensemaking. 🌿🔬

Two sessions. Two science stories. One day of hands-on sensemaking.
I’m excited to present at the 2026 Mississippi Science Teachers Association Annual Conference on Tuesday, October 20.

When Wetlands Burn: Igniting Student Sensemaking Through Swamp Fires
🧪 11:35 a.m.–12:35 p.m. | MSU-RC-4B
From Fiction to Evidence: Investigating Vibranium Through Periodic Table Patterns
Both sessions are designed to move beyond telling students the science and instead give them opportunities to question, model, analyze evidence, make predictions, and explain what they observe.
Looking forward to connecting with science educators in Mississippi.

🔥 I’m presenting at the 2026 MSTA Science Conference!
Join me on Tuesday, October 20, at The Riley Center in Meridian, Mississippi, for two sessions that bring curiosity, creativity, and scientific reasoning into the classroom:
🌿 When Wetlands Burn: Igniting Student Sensemaking Through Swamp Fires
Explore how swamp fires can spark student questions, modeling, and evidence-based explanations of ecosystem change.
🧪 From Fiction to Evidence: Investigating Vibranium Through Periodic Table Patterns
Experience an interactive 5E lesson connecting Vibranium to periodic table patterns, predictions, and claim-evidence-reasoning.
I’m excited to learn alongside fellow science educators and share strategies you can bring back to your students!

This week in Biology at Istrouma Magnet High, I paused to reteach limiting factors and carrying capacity. My students were showing signs of what I call “phenomenon burnout,” so we slowed down and used a Louisiana nutria example to make the concepts clearer. 🌿
I played a clip from *Swamp People* to bring the bayou setting into the lesson. Students read a population graph and considered how food, space, and human hunting can limit a nutria population. They used evidence to explain population changes and discussed how nutria removal may help protect Louisiana’s wetlands.
Sometimes the most important move is recognizing when students need another way into the learning. #ThisWeekInBiology #IstroumaMagnetHigh #LouisianaScience
LSU has been awarded a $20 million National Science Foundation grant to build a one-of-a-kind ultrafast X-ray facility that could help scientists answer fundamental questions about how atomic and molecular forces operate.

While reading Ambitious Science Teaching, I began thinking about how I could help students organize what they were learning and make connections across a unit. That reflection led me to adapt the summary chart strategy into a simpler, more accessible format for my students.
A summary chart is more than a place to record information. It helps students identify patterns, connect evidence to scientific ideas, revise explanations and models, and recognize how their thinking changes as they learn.
Although summary charts are featured in Ambitious Science Teaching and used in OpenSciEd (Progress Tracker), they can support learning in any inquiry-based curriculum. The goal is to make student thinking visible and help learners use evidence to build stronger scientific explanations.
At The Baseline Lab, we believe students should not simply collect information. They should have opportunities to connect, question, explain, and revise their thinking.

While reading Ambitious Science Teaching, I came across the Summary Chart strategy and began thinking about my own students.
The book presents three versions of the Summary Chart, so the original strategy and formats are not my creation. However, as I studied them, I wondered whether simpler, more student-friendly versions might help my students better understand and use the strategy.
Students often complete an activity but struggle to explain what they learned from it, identify the evidence they collected, or connect that evidence to the larger scientific question. I wanted to make that thinking process more visible and manageable for them.
Using the three versions presented in Ambitious Science Teaching, I simplified the language, clarified the directions, and adjusted the organization to make the charts more accessible for students. The goal was to help students move beyond simply completing an activity and begin thinking about why they completed it, what evidence they gathered, and how that evidence changed or strengthened their understanding.
This resource is not about reinventing an established strategy. It is about taking a valuable instructional practice, studying it carefully, and thoughtfully adapting it to meet the needs of the students in front of me.
Sometimes improving instruction begins with one question:
Could a simpler version help more students participate in the sensemaking?
Adapted from the three Summary Chart formats presented in Ambitious Science Teaching.
