Brutal chart.
France and UK vs. Communist countries at their peak.
UK public spending as % of GDP is currently above Romania, Venezuela and China.
And France is a lost cause.

Due to popular demand, below the same data for some other European countries. Finland and Belgium have already crossed the point of no return, where the majority of voters have a vested interest in preventing any meaningful reforms of absurd state spending. Another two countries enjoying the socialist party as long as someone else is willing to finance it. At some point markets will say enough is enough though, like they did with France, and will stop buying their bonds at affordable rates forcing spending cuts.
The longer it takes, the more painful the necessary cuts will be. Enjoy the party while it lasts, it won’t last forever.
The point of no return by Richard von Mises is worth reading:
"A state becomes almost unreformable when the majority of the population is financially or structurally dependent on the state (state employees, civil servants, recipients of subsidies, grants, or transfer payments, etc.). As soon as those who net benefit from or are supported by the state outnumber those who do not, the system blocks reforms, since the majority votes out of self-interest for the preservation or expansion of state services."
Does this sound familiar? Some European countries, France, Belgium, Finland are already way beyond that point, closely followed by Germany, Spain, Austria and Italy. It works for a while, as long as markets buy more sovereign debt at reasonable interest rates. The party ends when they stop though. For France, they stopped this month, Belgium will be next.
The longer the socialist illusion persists, the more painful the inevitable cuts and adjustments will be. It’s pure arithmetic. Good luck Europe, good luck Euro. Buckle up, it won’t be pretty.

BEN SCALLAN: "What the Government is actually saying is, they want to send Irish troops into areas where aggressive superpowers don't want them. They want to send our soldiers on foreign missions that have been vetoed by nuclear-armed superpowers."

Erm, we have no idea when Chaucer died ...
Today, the day of Chaucer's death, let me recommend again this exceptional volume, containing, among others:
- Chaucer's complete works (including the translations)
- a brilliant Introduction
- a small introduction to each of the books
- explanatory and textual notes (around 400 pages)
- a glossary

Interesting question, this.
The answer is that when social housing goes pear shaped, the investor (your pension scheme) and the taxpayer get screwed, and the tenant gets evicted. Whereas in subprime only the mortgage holder gets screwed and evicted.
And the odour of sanctity.

I'm just wondering where that money will go next?
It has been an unquenchable and destructive bubble under the carpet since 2000.
The who, now?
A growing volume of voters who don’t like the government are drifting to the populist right instead, creating a new front in Ireland’s political fragmentation.

Yes you are.
The EU is NOT an impartial actor to Israel and peace "is enforcement" is not peace "keeping"
IPAS was always a property scam. State money used, initially, to rescue those friends of the government still struggling with debts from the Crash, then everyone wanted a go, and it became a free for all.
If you thought IPAS was genuinely doing good in the world, you were had.

This is madness. Our strongest suit in International Peacekeeping is that our Nation was Colonised and remains partitioned.
We are now seeing a hop skip and a jump to standing beside the nations of Sykes/Picot that colonised and partitioned the Middle East/West Asia.
