ALT WHY WE WATCH COPS To advocate for the rights of others especially those most vulnerable to police repression due to race, gender, housing status, immigration status, or sexual orientation. Provide evidence on behalf of those targeted by police, in order to hold police accountable and challenge police narratives [in bold] To educate our neighbors about police brutality and misconduct and model community self-defense.

ALT DEALING WITH POLICE Assess the situation before you engage. Ask yourself: Will my presence escalate the situation for the person being targeted by the police? Does it feel critical that this interaction is filmed? Am I more effective watching from across the street or several feet away? Cops are skittish. Don’t approach them from behind and always keep your hands visible. Try to remain calm. If questioned, state that you are not there to interfere, just observe. If cops ask you to back up, comply, and record yourself complying if you are filming. When we're copwatching, our focus is on supporting our neighbor, not berating the police (we do that later).

ALT A whiteboard reading "Jail Support for folks being released + loved ones. Could you use support with: phone calls, warm clothes, transportation, a warm place to wait, cigarettes, food + drink, masks + PPE, first aid? Free! Chicago Community Jail Support" is propped up against a metal trash can in the snow. In the upper left background, the jail support volunteers are sitting with supplies for folks being released and a heater.
