Western States Endurance Run was an experience so epic it will take me a minute to share the story. In the meantime just know that a finish with 3+ mins to spare would not have been possible without the logistics, pacing and coaching support of Crew Chief Tami Strand, Pacer Dan Turpin, Pacer Chris Russell, Pacer Zach Strand and Coach Ian Sharman. Coach Ian literally wrote the book on The Art of Ultrarunning but he also knows a thing or 2:22 about the marathon. Excellent run.
Beautiful day for the #BigBearMarathon. 56 secs away from downhill PR and 10 mins+ quicker than 2009 flat PR. Being 46 has been fun so far - 2xhalf mara wins, 1 mara win (+ 2nd today) and 1 50k win. Avoiding injury is harder but super shoes have negated the effects of aging. 1/2
Weird run today, took about 10 miles to get into any sort of rhythm. Then it was off to the races. With the 10 minute downhill penalty, looks like a BQ -14 mins. Rode to the start with Coach Ian who came in 2nd with a blazing 2:22! Congrats runners and thank you volunteers.👊🏼👏🏼🙌🏼
Big Bear Marathon is a virtual running flume ride with 5000’ of descent. The race was canceled the past two years due to snow and road washouts. Looks like all systems are go for tomorrow. 50 degree temp swing from start to finish. The first 13 miles wind around 10,600’ San Bernardino Peak on the right in this photo from yesterday’s shakeout.
